Tell our readers what happened when you called the PIP Enquiry Line on 0800 121 4433.

Please use the comments section below to keep other readers updated on what kind of service is being provided right now and what they can expect when they call.

We’d like to know:

  • Which day, and what time of day, did you call?
  • How long did you wait for an answer, if you got one at all?
  • If you got an answer, was it from a human or was it an Artificial Intelligence chatbot?
  • Did your issue get resolved properly?

Why we are asking about the PIP Enquiry Line

Call waiting times on the vast majority of DWP phone lines have been terrible for a very long time.

In February 2002, the DWP told claimants that they ‘should not be concerned if they hear a “human like” voice when they contact us’ because the DWP are introducing ‘Conversational Platform’ software to answer some phone queries.

Here at Benefits and Work we’re concerned that the introduction of computer software may lead to a worse service, whilst allowing the DWP to claim that calls are now being answered much more quickly.

One risk is that chatbots will answer your call to the PIP Enquiry Line quickly, but will be able to respond only to the simplest queries.

If your call is in any way complex you may talk to a chatbot and then be put on hold endlessly whilst waiting to speak to a real person.

What readers have told us about calling 0800 121 4433

We asked readers to tell us about their experience of calling DWP helplines.  We wanted to know which one was providing the worst service, so we could look at that one first.

Whilst the Universal Credit Helpline and the Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances line were both appalling, the PIP Enquiry Line on 0800 121 4433 seemed to attract the most negative comments.

People told us things like:

“I’ve found the PIP enquiry line has to be the worst one for me. Most recent call approximately 58 mins to be answered. Good job I had time on my hands!!”

“Over the course of about 4 days I spent nearly 10 hours waiting to get through to PIP, eventually after hour and half got answered, then had to ring again 2 weeks later and waited 45 minutes.”

“I had to make five attempts in one day to give details for pip.  Each time I was cut off before finishing. On one occasion the phone was answered and automatically hung up. I managed to complete it after just over two hours.”

“PIP - got through eventually, on hold for almost half an hour, then told someone would ring back, 3 weeks later, no one phoned back, and now I'm struggling to get through, and when I do what is said does not make any sense.”

“55 minutes to the PIP helpline - on every occasion and without exception. And only to seek extensions for my clients for the return of renewal forms.”

How you can help

By telling us, and other claimants, about your call in the comments section you can help us expose any lies the DWP may try to tell about an improved telephone service.

You can also make sure that other claimants know the sort of things that can go wrong and give them a better chance to prepare for them.

Remember, we only want to know about calls to the PIP Enquiry Line on 0800 121 4433, though we may start pages for other numbers if this one is used regularly.

Those questions again:

  • Which day, and what time of day, did you call?
  • How long did you wait for an answer, if you got one at all?
  • If you got an answer, was it from a human or was it an Artificial Intelligence chatbot?
  • Did your issue get resolved properly?

Tell the work and pensions committee

From today, 26 April 2023, we're also asking claimants who are struggling to get through on the phone to email the House of Commons work and pensions committee and tell them about your experience.

The committee can put pressure on the DWP to either improve the phone system or make changes until they can, such as not enforcing deadlines for returning forms or for letting them know about changes of circumstances.

You can read more about this idea here or just email the committee at this address:

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

Almost half a million PIP helpline calls deliberately disconnected in April 2023

Almost half a million callers to the PIP helpline in the month of April were deliberately disconnected by the DWP before they could even wait in a queue, a freedom of information request by Benefits and Work has revealed.  The proportion of calls cut-off before entering the queue is now greater than the proportion who even get to wait for an hour or more before giving up or getting disconnected.  Read more.

I called today to make a claim and got through very quickly . All in all I was on the phone for 20 minutes in total and I couldn't have waited more than a few minutes to be connected to someone.

Called multiple times on Thursday between 1.30pm and 5pm. First time I got through to a person after 52 minutes but 10 seconds into the call, I got disconnected. After that every call disconnected between 20 and 40 minutes on hold. Guess I will try again tomorrow. So frustrated right now. What a waste of an afternoon!

Phoned the Welsh Language PIP Enquiry Line, first two calls the recorded message was garbled to the point of incomprehensibility, third time cut off after 4 minutes. It’s only for a change of address but they have no means of receiving it other than by phone, which seems primitive, in this day and age. Pretty much a non-service as it stands. Having said that, it took the DWP more than 6 months to post the forms for the original claim for PIP in the first place so no worse than expected.

had a review form in Sept 2021 which was sent back within the stated timescale with changes to conditions also rang in April 2022, June 2022, Sept 2022, and lastly October 2022 with updates due to diagnosis of cancer and change in physical and mental capability . Still waiting for response all calls took over an hour to connect and have had the same answer every time " We are behind and you will continue to be paid your current rate till its looked at " this is now 14 months later. So payments have not been at the correct rate for all this time. causing extreme stress, anxiety not to mention financial hardship.

The length of time people are being left to wait to answer the phone is a disgrace. This not only causes anxiety for those waiting, but also can use battery life on phone. Even when writing to them they do not get back to you. Totally incompetent service and totally unacceptable also. This government created this mess and people are being left to starve because the service has been designed to prevent people accessing money. It is cruel, unjust and a disgrace that people are subjected to such a poor service.

I've spent nearly 5 hours on hold over 4 attempts in the last 2 days. I'm currently on hold, attempt No.5. 34 minutes so far. They laughingly make reference to top class service when, in fact their service is deplorable. I suffer from anxiety & depression amongst other things and attempting to contact PIP is making me ill. Disgraceful.

I’m on hold now but can anyone tell me why I’ve been paid a random amount as my first payment and why they are saying my next payment will be for £97 🤷‍♀️

Called on 24th October at 1.49. Waiting time 56 minutes. I have been in receipt of PIP since March 2022. Reported missing payment on 3rd October as advised by DWP. I am still awaiting the £150 cost of living award and it's now 6 weeks since the payments were made. I was told all I can do is wait. Very poor service for disabled people.

I have been hanging on for 49 minutes and I last rang and hung on for 20 mins, I just want to change my bank details - wish there was a simple way to do this - why isn't there a way to do this?

I waited a hour on phone to them. Then they said sorry no one is available to take your call. Goodbye and hung up. I’m trying again now and still on hold after 45 mins.

Yeah had to phone up pip today Friday the 28th of October 2022 and was put on hold for 1 hour and 3 minutes before anyone answered the phone I suffer with anxiety due to a mental health problem and my anxiety was thru the roof as I sent them my pip review award on Tuesday the 11th of October 2022 registered and signed for cost me about £7.65 to send it to them  so I new they would have to acknowledge getting the form and evidence plus it cost me another £7.00 to get photostat done of my medical evidence they have had last 18 years but still got to send it in every 3 years. They sent me a text on Thursday the 13th of October 2022 to say they had received my form. But now today I hit a letter saying they hadn't received my form telling you what my anxiety is really thru the roof as, said form had to be back on Monday the 31st of October 2022 and its now Friday the 28th of October 2022. We'll eventually when I did get to speak to a human after 1 hour and 3 minutes on the phone they tell me they have received it on 13th of October 2022 this is definately a flawed and failing system I've got severe OSTEOATHRITYS pain in both my knees and have to go thru this tense and stressing time every 3 years my condition is a deteriorating  one and won't get any better as, surgeon said he can't operate on my legs because of lymphodemia as I could loose my legs. As wound would not heal up properly.
