Why we are asking about the PIP Enquiry Line

Call waiting times on the vast majority of DWP phone lines have been terrible for a very long time.

In February 2002, the DWP told claimants that they ‘should not be concerned if they hear a “human like” voice when they contact us’ because the DWP are introducing ‘Conversational Platform’ software to answer some phone queries.

Here at Benefits and Work we’re concerned that the introduction of computer software may lead to a worse service, whilst allowing the DWP to claim that calls are now being answered much more quickly.

One risk is that chatbots will answer your call to the PIP Enquiry Line quickly, but will be able to respond only to the simplest queries.

If your call is in any way complex you may talk to a chatbot and then be put on hold endlessly whilst waiting to speak to a real person.

What readers have told us about calling 0800 121 4433

We asked readers to tell us about their experience of calling DWP helplines.  We wanted to know which one was providing the worst service, so we could look at that one first.

Whilst the Universal Credit Helpline and the Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances line were both appalling, the PIP Enquiry Line on 0800 121 4433 seemed to attract the most negative comments.

People told us things like:

“I’ve found the PIP enquiry line has to be the worst one for me. Most recent call approximately 58 mins to be answered. Good job I had time on my hands!!”

 “Over the course of about 4 days I spent nearly 10 hours waiting to get through to PIP, eventually after hour and half got answered, then had to ring again 2 weeks later and waited 45 minutes.”

 “I had to make five attempts in one day to give details for pip.  Each time I was cut off before finishing. On one occasion the phone was answered and automatically hung up. I managed to complete it after just over two hours.”

 “PIP - got through eventually, on hold for almost half an hour, then told someone would ring back, 3 weeks later, no one phoned back, and now I'm struggling to get through, and when I do what is said does not make any sense.”

 “55 minutes to the PIP helpline - on every occasion and without exception. And only to seek extensions for my clients for the return of renewal forms.”

How you can help

By telling us, and other claimants, about your call in the comments section you can help us expose any lies the DWP may try to tell about an improved telephone service. 

You can also make sure that other claimants know the sort of things that can go wrong and give them a better chance to prepare for them.

Remember, we only want to know about calls to the PIP Enquiry Line on 0800 121 4433, though we may start pages for other numbers if this one is used regularly.

Tell the work and pensions committee

From today, 26 April 2023, we're also asking claimants who are struggling to get through on the phone to email the House of Commons work and pensions committee and tell them about your experience. 

The committee can put pressure on the DWP to either improve the phone system or make changes until they can, such as not enforcing deadlines for returning forms or for letting them know about changes of circumstances.

Almost half a million PIP helpline calls deliberately disconnected in April 2023

Almost half a million callers to the PIP helpline in the month of April were deliberately disconnected by the DWP before they could even wait in a queue, a freedom of information request by Benefits and Work has revealed.  The proportion of calls cut-off before entering the queue is now greater than the proportion who even get to wait for an hour or more before giving up or getting disconnected.  Read more.

    Tried calling  pip enquiry line. Having eventually got through the menu. The section was engaged and git cut off. What the he'll is going on .

    tried to put date of birth in like it asked, would not let me so now im in long que 55 mins so far.

    I have rung 4 times selected option 6 and been cut off. No explanation. This is really poor service. What is happening?

    i recieved an extension letter extended my pip till August 2023.
    yesterday received a pip renewal pack to bes ent back to them by 12th October 2022. this is 11 months early.  ihave  heard of 6 months. 
    now im on phone waiting and waiting to speak to someone
    has anyone else received renewal pack 11 months early?

      @tracie Yes I was told mine was May 2023. They sent me a renewal pack early June so mine was also 11 months early.

    I was on hold for 55 minutes then got to speak to a human but once they had done security checks I went to tell them what I had called for and they cut me off I ended up in tears I have autistic spectrum disorder and can't face going through all that again

    They text to say that they tried to contact me however I have no missed calls on my phone. When you try to call back, it's impossible to get through. So frustrating!!!

    I asked if I was entitled to claim pip..told them I lived abroad, in Spain and that I have stage 4 terminal metastatic breast cancer
    Was sent the forms...

    After many calls and being told it was all being dealt with, my final call on 18/06/2021  I spoke to a lady who just said I wasn't entitled to PIP as I live in Spain...that was it. Does no one know the definitive rules?
    I am trying to get through again...by the grace of god I'm still alive...albeit not in the very best of health, but I'm going to give it another go.

    Tues 20 th sept, waited 1 hour 12 minuts to be disconnected, a appearance in a jobcenter will happen AGAIN and they can call the police AGAIN and the police can tell them to wise up AGAIN, when you have serious anger management problems since a head injury they should not aggitate me as i dont know what i am doing or will do, just know it will be messy

    Can relate to this 100% and it stresses me the hell out I work part time but this is still a sucky service need to ask for an extension as my advisor for PIP at Epilepsy Scotland can’t see me till the 3/10/22.

    I can’t get through and they put me through a sawmill of choices before I can even get to the queue to wait for someone to answer my enquiry.
    I was on hold for so long and given the kind of tablets that I’m on for my epilepsy I ended up falling asleep waiting for an advisor to answer my call.

    It’s bad enough my GP expect me to phone at 8am to organise to speak to my doctor so I can ask for a letter of support and my medical records from the last time I was awarded PIP which I can rarely manage and my partner suffers from similar issues with epilepsy so it’s unlikely that she could help me with this at all so till I get this sorted out I’m left with that hanging over my head and stressing me out in the meantime which is not good for my epilepsy in the first place 😢

    Not to mention I need to phone and speak to my epilepsy liaison nurse and organise a letter of support and discuss any medical evidence they can provide for the PIP review too.

    I wish they would understand that this is a long term condition which has rarely changed and it’s hard enough to cope with and deal with without all this extra stresses on top of it.

    Friday 9th Sept at 15:40 called to ask for a letter showing entitlement to renewed award,took me 1 hour 11 minutes ,to simply ask to post something that should have already been sent .

    Still waiting after an hour. All customer serice agents are busy at the moment? Morelike on annual leave or called in sick. Their attitude is, if the phone is ringing, just let it I have something else to do. They'll call back some other time.  Welcome to the DWP.

    Been on the phone you pip since 9.15am this morning it's now 11.15am and still nothing it just keeps saying all customer services are busy. Seriously how can they be busy for 2 hours 😫

    Horrendous I need to get through to ask for extension I've rang 2 weeks approx 5 times a day minimum 30 minutes each time my deadline 15th Sept. Is there another number? I'm so worried & making my mental health issue even worse..
