DLA help please on mental health grounds was created by Markov
Hi there, I am looking for some extra help and tips please. I am currently completing the dla form as I am from c sytNorthern Ireland and we havent changed to the pip yet. I am following the guide to help me fill the form in. I am applying on mental health grounds i have severe depression anxiety and post traumatic stress. I have booked my appointment with my doctor for the next few weeks to get a letter off him to send with my application pack. That way I can look to see what he has wrote and if its all relevant to support me. I also have a copy of my esa medical report which i had done a four months ago and it is a very good report. I will also send this with my application. I am worried because I genuinely think i deserve dla and think i might get refused due to the fact I dont have a psychiatrist report also to send. I use to see a psychiatrist a few years ago but there was nothing more they could do for me so it wasnt worthwhile carrying on seeing them. Can anyone please give my any tips as to anything else i can include in my application, what about letters from family and friends that help me. Can I have a successful application just with a doctors letter and esa medical report and what ive wrote. Thank you sorry it was so long.

I've had a look through your previous posts and a couple of things stand out!
First, you appear to have been completing the DLA forms for 3 months, there is usually a return date associated with the issuing of the form, are you sure that that this has not already passed, the DWP will sometimes accept a late form but most often they will refuse the claim and require the claimant to start the process again.
Secondly and this may be just an omission, but you have not talked about your care needs in any of the posts! DLA will be awarded because you show that you need assistance or prompting to carry out your daily activities such as preparing and eating food, washing and dressing, planning a route and going out and other, what are called bodily functions. The DLA Claim guide explains this in more detail.
You need to talk about the things you cannot do rather than those that you do not do, you need to explain why you cannot do these things and what would happen if you did.
You do not need to be receiving the help you need to be awarded DLA but there does have to be a belief that you need it.
If we can help more, please reply to this post.

Hi Gordon thank you for your reply. I went and got a new dla form as the last one had expired. I am nearly completed the full form sorry I did not clarify I have actually used the dla guides and included care meals going out etc, I have extra information about 20 a4 pages. What I wondered was can I be successful in getting just with my information and my doctors and a esa medical report. I thought I would have needed a letter from a psychiatrist in order to be successful.

Medical evidence from a specialist will always be of assistance but is not a pre-requisite for a DLA award, what it will do is place even more emphasis on the assessment report, assuming there is one, which may be troublesome if your problems are not obvious.
I know that Bro in one of their previous replies suggested that you look at your medical records, have you done this? If you are still left with only your responses on the form, your GP's letter and your ESA report, then it is what it is and it sounds as if you have made the best of what is available.
