On completing the carers allowance claim form

I believe the claim form for carers allowance is the DS700 which is available on the www.gov.uk website. Unlike the esa50 and pip forms it looks like there's hardly anything to answer or evidences requirements to support an application.

1) Is it simply a case of just filling the form in and provided the carers patients is getting the appropriate benefit e.g. pip the carer will get the benefit provided other criteria are also met e.g. cares for 35 hours?
If so how is this investigated(35 hours care being given)? Unlike the esa50 and PIP forms, the carers form doesn't seem to ask for any evidences etc. Is there a guide or things that need to be done in order to ensure an application is successful/3 months backdate is successful in the same way there is a pip guide, esa guide?

2) One question regarding the form. On page 8 the carer need to put if they had any breaks in caring which was as a result of the patient being in care or similar place. It then says to tick columns if medication etc was taken during these periods.
If you have been visiting doctor, nurse, taking medication etc as an outpatient only(and never as an impatient) does that mean you don't need to tick any columns?

thanks

To answer your questions.

1. They will look at the other benefits you are receiving to see whether your claiming CA is compatible with your stated limitations it may also impact on any current assessments that are on-going, I believe you have just submitted a new ESA50, so your ability to provide 35 hours care to someone may be raised in any face to face you have for your ESA and depending on your answers my have an adverse effect on your claim if you are unable to explain how you provide the care required with no impact to your own health.

2. The questions on page 7 and 8 relate specifically to time spent as an in-patient so any out-patient care would not count.

hi Gordon

im not asking for me, its for my mothers carer(my brother). she has just been awarded enhanced care component of pip.

please clarify:

1. you said they will look at other benefits and 'stated limitations'. I don't see anything on the ds700 asking about details of the patients limitations, it just ask about benefits received and weather you care for 35 hours. is that what you meant by stated limitations or are we meant to actually give detailed explanation of care given in other information section.

2. although she has been awarded enhanced care pip, my mother is in the work related activity group for esa(an old decision). will her current status in the wrag possibly affect her carers application for carers allowance or or is that unlikely considering she gets the enhanced pip care(not mobility)?

I'm not entirely sure who is making the claim for Carers Allowance, whether it is your mother or your brother

1. There is no requirement to explain the carers health on the DS700.

2. If it is your brother who is the carer and he does not receive ESA or PIP then then is no issue. If it is your mother and she is in the WRAG then it is possible then her caring may affect her ESA. I don't expect it will result in a new assessment, but the fact that she is caring may be raised when her ESA is re-assessed and she will need to explain how she provides 35 hours of care a week within the limitations that she has stated on the ESA50.

Hi Gordon

Sorry for the confusion.

It my brother who is applying for carers allowance as he cares for my mother who is ill. He does not receive esa or pip.

although my mother gets enhanced pip she is also in the esa wrag group which may seem a contradiction regarding stated disabilities. I think you are saying no but just to double check, will this cause any problems for anybody?

thanks

If he does not claim any other benefits, can provide the 35 hours per week of care and does not earn more than £110 per week then he will not have any problems with the claim.
