PIP - Agoraphobia - Mobility was created by amberkindness
Hello,

I'm applying for pip for my mental health. Part of my health problems, I suffer from agoraphobia and can only travel on pre-planned journeys. I work part -time and can only travel on relatively short distances and have to plan every aspect of the journey. I panic and suffer from severe anxiety when it's busy etc Is this sufficient enough (with proper explanation of how my disability effects me and evidence from professionals) to be considered for one of the rates in the mobility component?

I am worried as I work part-time, they'll try and argue as I can get out sometimes, I won't qualify for this. I don't want to write too much information, I've had to be moved locations at work due to this and suffer badly from tiredness and sometimes if it's a particularly bad journey (busy) it will take me a while to calm down at work to be able to function and once at home often can't go out again as I'm completely drained.

Any advice will be appreciated

Thank you

I am afraid that I think it likely that the fact that you travel to work will be held against you, from your post you can do this journey reliably and for the majority of days.

You may still be able to show that you cannot reliably follow an unfamiliar route on the majority of days, but you will need to explain why this is the case and what the differences between a familiar route and an unfamiliar one are.

There is additional guidance about "prompting" in regard to Going Out in the PIP Claim guide.

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for your reply.

That is disappointing as I qualified for the low care in DLA. However I will still try and look at the PIP claim guide.

I am off sick from work at the moment due to agoraphobia and depression. My work has been advised through occupational health to make adjustments at work and with distance and duration I have to travel. Would this be beneficial to put in PIP form?

Thank you

Yes, you should include this on the form, anything that suggests that the journeys that you are able to do cannot be done reliably will help.

Hello,

Would it be possible to put in form being unable to walk a certain distance due to agoraphobia. Not due to a physical problem but due to anxiety and panic. I am fine if it's quiet but if it's busy, I struggle to function. Direct journeys I find much easier to deal with, and walking in busy areas is almost impossible.

Thank you

I'm afraid this is unlikely to result in your scoring points the Moving Around Descriptor is a physical test of your ability to walk so you will struggle to convince the assessor or the Decision Maker that this is a valid reason.

There is also case law in this area, although it is for DLA I think it would still be seen as relevant for PIP, it states that a claimant who is unable to go out due to an illness such as agoraphobia cannot meet the requirements of the virtually unable to walk test unless they also have physical problems with walking.
