Universal Credit was created by Lucky22
Hi
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post about this on this forum but I have been worrying about Universal Credit, when it comes in. Am I correct in understanding that it will be compulsory, not optional to claim UC if you earn less than a certain amount? If this is the case what amount of capital would exempt you from having to claim UC, and what amount of yearly earnings?
The thing that worries me is if I recover enough to come off ESA in the future, when I started working I would probably only be capable of part time work, but with UC you are pushed to do a lot of hours, or face benefit sanctions aren't you? They don't seem to understand not everyone might be capable of 40 + number of hours per week.
Many thanks in advance.

Universal Credit is still a way off for most claimants.
It certainly won't be compulsory, no benefits are compulsory but it will replace JSA and a number of other benefits, so if you were to find yourself in a situation where you need to claim one of those benefits, then there will be a time when only Universal Credit will be available.
Have a look at the following

I know at the moment the tax credits system does have allowances and elements for people with disability which includes working 16 hrs rather than being expected to earn more, with a disability element and also additions for severe disability.
So would have thought UC would have something similar, but not sure. Here is some info on how it works at present with tax credits. Gordon hope you don't mind be providing the link for information.
