Income based ESA and carers allowance was created by 1048claire
My son is now my carer as and from 18th April 2016. (I am in receipt of higher rate of PIP for care & mobility.)
He has been claiming income-based ESA for a long time.
Today, he had a letter telling him that they couldn't pay him arrears of carer's allowance from 18th April to date as he had received IR based ESA for this period.
However, just before him claiming carers allowance, I phoned the Carers Allowance Unit, and they told me that he would receive the full amount of carers allowance, but they would reduce his ESA by £30 a week.
He receives £104.00 a week ESA. So that means he would be getting £74.00 a week
According to my records this means that he should be getting £62.10 carers allowance, and £74 ESA = £136.00 a week.
So from 18th April to 17th June, that means he should have had 9 weeks combined benefit @ £136.00 = £1224. But in fact, he has only had 9 weeks @ £104 = £936. So they owe him £288. But the carers allowance unit have said they owe him nothing????
I'm REALLY confused now. Can someone help please?

You would think that one of the departments would get it right!!!
AS he is receiving Income Related ESA, his Cares Allowance is treated as income and is therefore deducted £ for £, this is why their is no back payment of CA as he has received ESA(IR) without deduction In the overlap period.
However, his ESA(IR) will be increased by the Carers Premium (£34.60 a week) and this will be backdated to the date of his CA claim.
As the Premium is being added to his ESA, he needs to phone that department about it, not the Carers Unit.
So he will receive;
£62.10 - CA
£40.05 - ESA (£73.10 + 29.05 = £102.15 - £62.10 = £40.05)
£34.60 - Cares Premium
======
£136.75
