Hi All

Rejoined the site last week, but not had a good few weeks with my depression; so didnt post. I downloaded the guides and read some.I need some advise, I have until Monday the 6th to phone DWP to start the process of moving from an indefinite award of DLA high rate mobility and middle rate care, awarded in 2008. My problem is, im not sure i will be able to keep it together if i actually do manage to pluck up the courage to ring them, or be a blubbering wreck; as my depression has been that bad that i dont even phone family.

I was put into the care of the community in 2002, (and never been contacted by anybody since) after my Consultants said there was nothing else they could do for my conditions; so now i have no Consultants reports to rely on. Also my registered doctor, is in a practise where you have to see any doctor that is available, hence they dont know my history and how it affects me. So, how can i go and ask a doctor who i may have only seen 6 times in 11 years to write a report on my health!

Because of the above, I was advised to have a private medical report done in 2003 and 2008 by a specialist, the first for an appeal after an ATOS doctor visited my house and wrote a totally different report to what actually took place; which i appealed and won unanimously 3-0. The second in 2008 by the same specialist, when i was awarded the indefinite award; but now he has retired.

As i am moving from DLA to PIP, would i be able to use my retired Consultants 2008 report, or in fact any of my previous doctors letters, relating to my previous DLA claims/reviews; as they have all fully supported every claim. Or will i need to get a new medical report. As i have never actually seen any letter that my registered doctor has produced, and dont want to take a chance and rely on just one doctors input. Thanks in advance all, keep on the good work, as this site actually does make a difference to so many peoples lives.

Can someone ring on your behalf? You would still need to be present and would need to take the phone to authorise the DWP to speak to the person.

If you don't ring by the required date, then your DLA will be suspended and you will be given a further four weeks to make the call, if you do then you will receive the suspended payments.

If you don't ring by the end of the second period then I'm afraid your DLA claim will be closed.

You can certainly use old reports to support your PIP claim but you will need to explain why they are still relevant to your health as it is now and you need to be aware that the criteria for PIP are fundamentally different so if they were specifically written for a DLA claim then they may not have the same relevance for PIP.

Have a look at the PIP Claim guide for more information.

Hi Gordon, many thanks for the prompt reply and advise. I live alone and only manage to get out once a week at best, and then its only to see family. My grandaughter who looks after my needs that i cant do, was going to ring them, until she read the PIP form. She then panicked and felt she would feel uncomfortable talking to someone on the phone about me; as she gets upset easily.

I have been told you can have a paper claim if you have mental health issues (which i do, as well asphysical) so am going to look into that, if not i will have to ring on Monday myself.

Although you should be able to request a paper copy of the PIP1 as a reasonable adjustment under the Equality Act, I have to warn you that every member who has gone down this route with the DWP has had serious problems with getting a copy of the form.

Even if the DWP accept your request, it will not prevent your DLA being suspended as you claim will not be considered to have started until the DWP have a completed PIP1 in their hands.

If there is anyway that this can be done on the phone then I would encourage you do so.

Hi Clipclop
The phone call is not very scary. Collect together all the information they require, take a deep breathe and make the phone call. I am sure you can do it and be proud of yourself
