PIP post lung transplant was created by sheeps68
I'm helping a friend fill in her PIP form as she transfers from DLA. Her transfer is following a change of circumstances and rather a big change. She has had a double lung transplant. A lot of things have changed but there are still significant issues.

Whilst she can now walk she is unable to use public transport due to infection risks. Therefore her car is still a huge need. There are care needs which are fairly transferable issues from guides in other areas. She is and always will be significantly immunocompromised.

Does anyone have any advice or input that will help us to put in a complete comprehensive PIP application that addresses transplant issues. We shall be using the guides for all other aspects.

Can anyone give us an idea as to wording or things for things relating to transplant issues please?

First of all have a look at the PIP Claim guide, this explains all of the criteria against which she is being assessed.

She should certainly mention the issues with travelling on Public Transport, but don't expect to score for it, whilst the DWP guidance does make reference to it's use, the actual Descriptors do not and we regularly see Decision Makers refusing points for this reasons.

So she needs to explain in detail any other difficulties that she has with Going Out or Moving Around.

She should pay particular attention to the use of "reliably", there is a section about this in the Claim guide.

Other things that she needs to be aware of;

- the DWP believe that all surgery leads to a complete recovery whether it is the case or not.

- PIP requires that all limitations must last for at least nine months so she needs to clearly distinguish between problems that are post surgery and likely to go away and problems that the surgery will not fix

If you have more questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Just wanted to share how we got on.

We put the forms in and was very honest about my friends difficulties, Care issues was fairly easy with following your guides. Mobility w was honest about how her needs varied and how far she could walk sometimes much further than others. We emphasised the infection risks which are a major issue and how public transport was not an option. Within a week of putting the forms in she had a call to offer a medical at home and that went smoothly without difficulties. 2 weeks later she has had a decision of enhanced PIP for both aspects. So a relatively smooth transfer from DLA to PIP although not at all stress free.
