Clarification on meeting descriptors and DLA pay

Hi Gordon
Just want to clarify something that's bugging me firstly, how do you prove that you meet a certain descriptor? Obviously the statements we make on the pip form will indicate toward a certain descriptor, but how do claimants prove and enforce that the correct descriptor is applied to their case? And not overridden by an unqualified assessor in that specific medical field?. For having read many posts on this forum it seems to be the case even with medical evidence, bottom line how does a claimant ensure they get the assessor to agree on a mutually favoured point descriptor?
Secondly ,do the DLA stop or alter your award immediately from the date of your pip award.
Many thanks if you can enlighten me

There's no single strategy, it depends on your limitations and the evidence that you have available.

Some evidence will be categorical; the claimant has a double amputation below the knee and cannot walk.

Some will be advisory; the claimant has severe Osteoarthritis in both knees and cannot reasonably walk more than 10m without severer pain.

Some will only be suggestive, the claimant has severe OCD and this would be expected to have an impact on their daily activities.

It can also help if you can provide a detailed explanation of your problems, also consider how problems with one activity may also lead to problems with another. Try and break the activities into smaller tasks and explain the problems you have with each. For example; Preparing food can be broken down into preparation and cooking, the former into selecting the food items, washing, cutting, standing at a work surface, moving around the kitchen.

Don't forget you also need to deal with aids and prompting, assistance and supervision from someone else.

We know of members who have received the Enhanced rates after submitting more than 100 pages of evidence and explanation and others who only submitted a letter of diagnosis.

Once a Decision on your PIP claim is made, your DLA will remain in payment for a further four weeks.
