I am on ESA plus severe disablement allowance and it is up for renewal in October, with the interview presumably a few weeks before. I was considering doing permitted work, but if I do that will it just work against me in the assessment interview? I hear that now you get put into the work related group from the support group and lose money, and that I wouldn't be able to get it back under universal credit or something like that?

Do you mean October next year?
If the Permitted Work was at odds with the reasons that you had been awarded ESA in the first place, then your doing it could undermine your claim.

To clarify, I am currently on PIP and ESA with component parts of severe disablement, disability income guarantee and support group.
If I worked a few hours per week, would they then move me from support group to something else? I spoke to the DWP and they said that being in the work related group meant you were being prepared for work within a time frame of 12-24 months or thereabouts and wouldn't lose money? My renewal is October 2018.
I am doing some volunteering at CAB at present, but it's mostly just one day and don't know if I can do more consistently.

As I said, it depends on whether the work you are doing is at odds with the reasons that you have been placed in the SG in the first place. As a deliberately silly example, if you were placed in the SG through the Mobility activity and you took a job delivering the Christmas post then this would be at odds with your award.

So what if I was moved to the work related group? How much would I lose and what does it entail?
I am on it for schizoaffective disorder, i don't know what that rules out, presumably customer facing roles or those in large groups?

It's about £6 per week. Being placed in the WRAG would mean that you would be required to attend Work Focused Interviews and to participate in Work Related Activity, failing to do so could mean that your ESA is sanctioned.
