Self employed and a carer was created by dayton
Hi folks I receive carers allowance for my wife who receives pip both enhanced rates and used to recieve contributory ESA with IR top up but since I declared net earnings of £4600 annual earnings through self employment the income related top up has been stopped she now receives contributory esa. Also council tax benefit has been suspended until I send a completed self employment form and bank statements covering the period from the date her ESA IR ended I suspect IR will end but will it affect my carers allowance or other benefits she gets.

There is a £120 per week disregard for earned income after some deductions for CA, if you have earned more than this in any week then the CA is not payable although the claim remains open. You cannot average your earnings without prior agreement.

Hi again if I can elaborate the house is owned by my wife the 2 rooms upstairs are advertised on air bnb, Trip adviser, booking .com, in my name as she is unable to do the the I T. We consider this as being under the rent a room scheme as we dont earn over £7500 I do approx 1 1/2 hrs per wk averaged out because bookings are seasonal. The rental income is paid into a Paypal account in my name and which I transfer into our join current account as & when needed by my wife or the out goings of the rental. I realise this is quite conveluted, but does this mean I have earned the money or my wife and if the earnings are my wife's will it affect her pip & contributory ESA or my carers allowance? Also I have given details of income and outgoings with an explanation to DWP (although regrettably not in so much detail as this) and was told when I called them it had been forwarded to the decision maker. I was under the impression any work income relating to me through irregular work would be averaged out so am very concerned after reading your reply. thank you for you help on this matter

I'm sorry but I can't say whether you will be classed as having earned the income or not, ultimately, only a Decision Maker can decide this. I can say that if your wife is only receiving ESA(CB) and PIP then it will not affect any of her benefits.

Income can be averaged for CA but only by prior arrangement, otherwise, it will be dealt with on a week by week basis.
