Housing Benefit/Rent Deposit was created by Mikey
I'm currently in receipt of ESA and Housing Benefit for the private property I rent. I'm thinking of re-locating to another privately rented property. However; the owners of the property are asking for 2 months rent as a deposit and one month's rent upfront before I can move in. Will HB be able to assist me with the deposit and the one month up front rent?

Hi Mikey

Housing benefit will not be able to assist you with the deposit, as you are already in receipt of housing benefit then you may be able to apply for Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) but you have to be in receipt of either HB or UC housing element.
When you say you are thinking of re-locating to another privately rented property, is it within the same local authority, if it is then you can stay on housing benefit but if it is to a new local authority then you may have to apply for Universal Credit depending on your circumstances.

The property is within the same local authority. What is the Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP)?

DHP's are cash-limited and there is no guarantee you will receive one. DHP's are administered by local authorities and can only be given to people who qualify for at least some housing benefit. The local authority can give you a DHP if you appear to the local authority to require some further financial assistance in order to meet housing costs, they are discretionary and you cannot appeal if you are refused.
