PIP Q5 Managing treatments - Therapy? was created by buster21
Hi moderators and all

Any help would be very much appreciated. Helping 16 year old claim PIP who needs and has an appointee to act for him for benefit purposes.

The lad has ADHD including severe behavioural issues and is frequently non compliant. Also, has a bowel incontinence which results in involuntary soiling on a daily basis. He has had this problem for years.

Parents are following instructions to try and help him from given by a Paediatric Specialist Nurse, Bowel and Bladder Clinic where he is seen.

The instructions are to "encourage him to sit on the toilet 20 minutes after eating for at least five minutes - this takes up a lot of time as you can imagine - several times throughout the day. As well as making sure he drinks x amount glasses of water a day - lots of prompting here too.

In addition to encouraging him to exercise - as this can help - prompting needed. Now and then filling in a chart to record bowel activities for the nurse. Encouraging him to eat correctly and helping him clean up after soiling accidents - all very time consuming which he cannot manage without hands on help and prompting - supervision is also a need due to ADHD symptoms. Not to mention encouraging him to take medication for bowel problems and ADHD medication - very time consuming also.

In terms of Therapy - could any of the above count as therapy?

I guess the 1 point for this activity is probably a given concerning this descriptor. But could we argue for more in terms of "therapy" given? T

To be honest I'm still not really sure what therapy is for PIP reasons? Quite confusing. Any help would be great.

Hi Buster

“Therapy” means therapy to be undertaken at home which is prescribed or recommended by a—
(a) registered –
(i) doctor;
(ii) nurse; or
(iii) pharmacist; or
(b) health professional regulated by the Health Professions Council,

So in the case of this 16 year old he is undoubtedly receiving therapy at home as subscribed by the specialist nurse and clinic where the parents have instructions on exactly what they have to do, and I would detail it just as you have done so and include an additional sheet if necessary.

The prompting that the parents do for the medication comes under the separate point of managing medication.
