Internal prosthetic following bone cancer

Hi, i have had high mobility DLA, with low care for 20/plus years, following bone cancer, i have internal prosthetic to right leg. This means my knee and half tibia replaced, and rearrangement of muscles Etc. I have never been pain free since, though on the other hand i dont have the tumour! I have significant difficulty in walking and standing and use a walking stick. I also have a mobility scooter.
i am now waiting for my face to face assessment, and rang the hospital to ask for letter of support. The nurse specialist i spoke to said I would be unlikely to get PIP. She said patients with traumatic amputations are being refused PIp, and though she was happy to write she was not optimistic.
I am not sure what to do. My biggest concern is loss of automatic right to blue badge, i am terrified of losing it, as it will mean there are many places i wont be able to access, even the supermarket,
Should i go ahead with the claim? All i have is one very bad leg, but is it enough?

Hi V

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

PIP is not about the conditions you have, it is about how you manage your daily life and your mobility. Yes I am sure there are lots of people with traumatic amputations that have been turned down, but what you don't know and what the nurse will not know is how they filled out their forms. Because the process is not easy and because some people have an appalling time with assessors it's easy to lose sight of the fact that many people are successful for a variety of conditions. Only you can decide if it's worth it. You say you have 'significant difficulty in walking and standing - so if you decide to apply, make sure you detail your difficulties against the stated PIP criteria. Do not assume the person reading it will understand anything about amputations and the effects - spell it out.

With regard to a blue badge - many blue badge holders do not claim PIP.

People are right, how amazing are you lot, a reply straight away! Thanks
And your reply emphasised for me the biggest problem. I let that nurse suggest I i was ineligible for PIp. Because i am embarrassed to admit pain, or oddly feel ungrateful, when basically, they saved my life. How dim am I? Thirty odd years ago , after the initial op. I would fantasise about putting my leg on the railway line so it would get cut off. I have got good at management, that is really the only difference over time. Lesson learnt, do not let others describe your pain, and lesson two, be more assertive and less diminished, thanks again

Hi Mab,
I hope you will not mind me adding some words of encouragement to your post. Over 30 years ago I was treated for bone cancer in my leg. I have some lasting negative effects from the surgery and radiotherapy I received which affect my mobility. I recently transferred from DLA to PIP . I received higher rate mobility on DLA and nothing for care. I have been awarded standard care and standard mobility on PIP.
It is more difficult to be awarded higher rate mobility on PIP than DLA but this shouldn't stop you trying.

Your words about not wanting to seem ungrateful struck a chord with me. Although the medical personnel have undoubtedly helped you, only you can truly know the day to day difficulties you face and there is no shame in being honest about them in your application.

I would like to wish you good luck and hope you will return to let us know how you have got on.

All good wishes in your application and beyond.

Thankyou so much for your kind support. Sorry for late reply, I have not been looking at the site, as waiting for my decision. i received it yesterday, got standard care, no mobility! Oddly the very same post brought the rather late letter of support from specialist nurse, saying i have restricted mobility and am in constant pain! Inclined to appeal, but the personal care doesn’t get reviewed till 2029, so the thought of not having too keep wading through s**t is appealing! She also said i was stoic and managed my condition very well, which of course and ironically made my day! Its these words of understanding that help so much, as were yours! Thankyou again

Hi Mab, you are welcome. I am surprised you got 0 points for mobility but pleased to hear about care award.
I appreciate it is a personal decision whether to got for a mandatory reconsideration particularly when you have a 10 year award and requires time to think about. If it is any help at all to know my standard mobility award was supported by a letter from a specialist oncology nurse outlining my mobility difficulties and was mentioned several times in the report .
Like I say it is a very personal decision but I wish you well whatever you decide.

Best wishes
