Hi all, I am in the process of completing my 2nd PIP2 form. Before I fill it in can I give you an example of how I am answering questions and perhaps you could point out anything that is wrong with the format or where I may have gone wrong etc.

eg. Q3 Preparing food.

I have problems on the majority of days preparing food because of stiffness and pain in my hands (especially right wrist) hip and back due to RA and breathlessness/tiredness due to pleural effusion and lung nodule. This is a complication for 3% of RA sufferers.

This causes me problems with chopping vegetables, safetly lifting pans on and off the hob, draining vegetables, stirring, cutting meat to serve. Fatigue and tiredness towards the end of day caused by lung problems,

I have the following aids and appliances:-
Electric can opener:- i cannot use a manual one as i can't grip or twist my right wrist due to pain and strength.
Chair:- to rest on.
Lightweight pans.
Quarter turn lever taps:- Again because of lack of strength and grip.
Easy/comfort grip utensils.
Easy grip jar opener.
Non-slip matting for grip.

On the majority of days my husband will prepare and cook dinner because it would be unsafe for me to do so. My RA is variable but the complications that come with it are more constant. An example of how it varies is one day I could chop an onion the next I couldn't put enough pressure on my hand to crumble an oxo cube. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it is at its best or worse.

I hope that makes sense, any pointers would be greatly appreciated :) x

Hi TraceyTracey

The first point that I think you should make is that your husband prepares the majority of the meals because of your RA.(don't put it at the end)

If you have any letters to confirm your diagnosis I would make reference to it here. eg "I am unable to prepare meals because of my severe rheumatoid arthritis (see letter X from Dr. Y dated 13/4/2018). The RA causes pain and problems with mobility in ....etc etc. As well as the pain I suffer from ..... breathlessness etc etc. Both the pain and poor breathing function lead to increased fatigue and tiredness especially as the day wears on.

(The reason for mentioning the letter at this point is - it reminds the reader that you have a medical condition and the evidence and you're not just saying it. It's very easy for an assessor not to tie up the evidence with the specific criteria unless you keep hammering it home. You can quote your letters through every question if necessary)

Then go onto say that you have adapted aids and appliances, but you need to emphasise that despite these, because of the things mentioned above the majority of the time you could not prepare meals because of .... etc etc... If you're not careful it's easy to give the impression that, you have all the aids and appliances - to you can actually manage well.

If you do try to prepare a meal you need to say whether you ever do this alone or if it is unsafe for you to do so. I don't get a sense of whether you ever lift pans with hot water (I know you have light weight ones)- but do you use them - is it safe for you to use them - if you have carried one pot do you have the strength to carry another? If you don't do it then say so loud and clear giving reasons.

You're doing great.

Thank you Bis for taking the time to reply to my post, I have a much clearer insight of the way and depth that i need to answer the questions. Yes I will make reference to the letters on every question as i have lots of them all stating breathlessness, pain, non control of my RA etc from consultants etc. I,m a typical mum who shrugs things off but I see for this I need to just be truthful and specific and not just dismiss my symptoms. Thank you once again :). I will keep you posted ;)
