Hi team
Would you be able to tell me what the household income threshold is for eligibility to claim universal credit. ? I am specifically trying to find out at what level a partners earnings would need to be,or not to be, for someone to be able to claim it . I am finding info on tariff amounts for every £ over . But I can't seem to find the actual amount that is classified as 'low income' to be able to qualify a claim . Thank you for your help.

Hi JJ

Unfortunately it is not that straight forward, calculations depend on each individual circumstances.

The amount your maximum Universal Credit will be reduced by depends on the type of income you have. For earnings the reduction is 63p for every £1 earned over your work allowance - the amount you are allowed to earn before your Universal Credit is reduced.

You can see how much benefit you might receive by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators or contact Turn2us on 0808 802 2000, 9.00 am - 5.30 pm Mondays-Fridays (except bank holidays).

Thank you Gary
I wonder where does this leave people who would not have a current UC claim but have had to stop working because of the coronavirus. ? They have been told by the government that they can claim universal credit . Eg: someone who is self employed & cannot be furloughed. Their income can go to zero. But if their partner has been furloughed then I presume their UC claim will be means tested against their partner' s furloughed amount & their claim will come out as a £0.
Sorry, it sounds like ' war & peace' but hope you can help.
Best wishes

Hi JJ

I believe you are correct, unless you are able to apply for 'New Style' ESA/JSA.

Most means tested benefits, what you get in one hand you loose from the other, although you may get an additional premium. If you are eligible for a contribution based benefit such as 'New style ESA' then household income is not taken into account.

This is why we advise forum members to seek advice from a welfare rights adviser who can ask all the specific relevant questions for the individual.

On the forum we give generic advice/information and not specific advice.

You can check by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators.
