ESA to SDP & Housing Benefit was created by jasonbudd1984
I am presently living with family and am on ESA (Support Group & PIP).
As I will be moving to a one-bed property, I understand this then makes me eligible for SDP (as I will be the sole occupant). If I am in receipt of SDP, I have to claim Housing Benefit (and not UC).
However, presumably, the ESA SDP needs to be awarded before I can submit a housing benefit application? Is there any broad average of how long such a change normally takes? I think I can only backdate the Housing Benefit by one month as it is...

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is
Welcome to Benefits and Work
In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ
My full name is showing, how can I stop it?
What ESA are you receiving, what is now called legacy ESA or New Style ESA? If the former then you should be receiving the Disability Income Guarantee as part of your payment.
If you are receiving New Style ESA then this is a Contribution Based benefit and there are no circumstances where the SD Premium can be added and you will have to claim Universal Credit in order to get help with your housing costs.
If you are receiving legacy ESA then the SD Premium can be added once you are living alone, you will need to complete an IS10 form to confirm your living circumstances it should be possible to do this over the phone.
The change is an administrative one so it should be possible for it to be done quickly, within a month but I can't guarantee this.
It is worth contacting your Local Authority once you are living alone and you have applied for the Premium, they may allow a claim for Housing Benefit even if the Premium is not actually in payment.

Thank you for your response. I wasn't even aware of this distinction within ESA.
Reviewing my most recent award letter it does state that there is a:
"Extra money because of the Disability Income Guarantee".
As such, if I am following, this would indicate that I am on the 'Legacy ESA', and thus eligible for SDP (if my circumstances matched the criteria)? Can you clarify that is correct?
Very helpful to know that the process is this IS10, as I was concerned it would mean a reapplication of ESA altogether (and thus a long delay...).

Yes, your receiving the DIG means that you are receiving legacy ESA and can have the SD Premium added once you are living alone.

Very grateful for the confirmation.
Once I have moved (and been awarded SDP and HB), I am under the impression that if I were to then move somewhere else again within the same authority (which I may have to do in a years time), as things stand I don't need to make a new UC then at this point either. Rather the situation is that I have to contact my Council and the HB is recalculated to the details of next property?
For obvious reasons lots about UC unnerves me, and wish to avoid it for as long as I can, so just trying to work out stuff in advance.

Hi jasonbudd1984
If you are in receipt of HB and you move within the same local authority area you do not have to apply for UC even if you were not getting SDP.
If you are in receipt of SDP and move to a different local authority area, you can still claim HB.
