PIP claim - suffering from acute/chronic fissure

Good morning,

I have joined here as a last resort as I am not sure what else to do regarding support/pip.

I'm aged 35 and for 6 years now have been living with a chronic pain condition which is diagnosed as 'acute anal fissure'.

This has had, and still has a huge impact on both my personal life and professional work.

I have used to eligibility criteria for PIP and am concerned I will not have a chance of getting it, despite huge impact on life.

Night time - I often wake up with sharp pain and very comfortable due to my condition and then can't sleep, need to go to bathroom, administer medicine or sometimes even run a bath to sooth things. I often have to change my clothing as they can become soiled. I have broken sleep during the night due to this.

Daytime - I'm in pain in that area more often than not. I have syringes of instillagel which numbs me inside and I can go through multiple syringes in a day and it has been much worse recently. I also have tablets for the pain and have to take fybogel.

On a typical day at work, I'll need to retreat to the bathroom (hopefully nearby) at any time to administer meds and sometimes due to my meds I can be incontinent but this is only occasional and various and leaves me very embarrassed. I carry spare clothing with me and must always be aware of where the toilet is. If things get too bad I must get home and run a hot bath to soak it (a known aid reccomended by consultant) and sometimes 3-4 baths a day.

In my personal life it is much the same, I have two children and often have had to cancel family outings as I cannot walk more than a single step without horrible cutting pain inside me. When it is really bad I cannot even talk to people, stand, walk or sit without huge discomforting pain, often needed to grab/put pressure on anal area to try relieve it. Sometimes I am just laying on the floor in agony.

I have regular treatments which work a little bit have side effects, I have to see consultant at hospital for Botox injections but they only last a few months and due to Covid this has been delayed. In spring 2020 I'm due to go into surgery for a biopsy and examination under GA. My only next option is an internal lateral spincherecerotomy which can leave me fecally incontinent for life. I would rather avoid the surgery at the moment as anything worse than what I have now would be true hell.

This condition has left me considering suicide on many occasions. I take anti depressants for the pain, not depression as such but just not wanting to be here anymore with this pain.

I don't have carers or people help me but have to carry around all my meds and spare clothes. My partner looks after me if she finds me in agony on the floor.

Mobility wise, on a good day I can go for a walk, on a bad day I can't leave the house as too painful to walk to car and sit in car. I have a special cushion to sit on which can help reduce pain but not eliminate it. I used to go kayaking, kite surfing, all sorts but that has all stopped now as I am in so much pain and never know if it will be a good day or bad day.

I'm sure there's loads more about my condition I've not mentioned but I am posting here as I hope to please get some advice.

I want to apply for PIP so I can perhaps afford more equipment to help, medication and anything else I may need. Even just having 'medicinal baths' is costing me loads in bills which I cannot afford. I'm prescribed 6 medicines. I've lost a previous job due to this condition causing me to have sickness/time off. I would like to keep my current job and do everything possible to help me be more comfortable each day.

I know there pip is made up of mobility element and care but looking at the basic questions, I don't know where I would fit in.

With the above in mind, does anyone think I can apply for PIP and can anyone offer me help and advice please? I am really struggling.

Thank you.

Hi Aaron

We can't tell you whether you would receive it or not - we are neither assessors or medical experts. However, you clearly have issues that have an impact on your life and I do know of people with similar issues to your own who have successfully applied for PIP.

I do advise you to go through the PIP guide. It is very long, but it will give you the detail necessary particularly when you are talking about any variabilities in your condition. I would not use words like "I often wake up..." because that is not easy to clarify. Much better to say I wake up 5 nights out of 7 ( or whatever it is - but you need to show it is for the majority of the time - which it sounds as if it is, so don't leave them in any doubt."
There is a question about managing toilet needs.

Also, be very clear about your mobility. Don't downplay it. If you have to stop - how soon do you have to stop, how long do you have to stop for? The guide will give you suggestions on how to do this. You can mention your bowel problems here.

Look and see what other questions it may also apply to. It's not always as obvious. Like what is your nutrition like, do you have the energy to care for yourself as well as you should etc.

The 110 pages can look daunting, but it's worth going through it, a bit at a time.
