ESA FIT NOTE procedure

ESA FIT NOTE procedure was created by Eloise
I’ve been granted ESA as a result of an online application. I think it must be contribution based. The difficulty I’m experiencing is that, despite the fact that I have long term health conditions, I find myself having to submit Fit notes from my GP every week, meaning that I write to her every week with a stamped addressed envelope and she sends a fit note back. By the time I receive it, the note has already expired. I’m wondering if this is normal as it seems very onerous and I’m constantly running into danger of missing the very short deadlines provided by the DWP.

Is there any reason that your GP is issuing Fit Notes for only a week? They can issue Notes for up to three months during the first six months of your claim.

No reason at all, as far as I can see. And, unfortunately, I've just discovered that my claim has now been discharged as I didn't get my latest FIT note in in time. The DWP timescales simply do not give any wiggle room at all or allow for Coronavirus-related postal delays. By the time I received my reminder letter, the deadline for submission had already expired!

All I can suggest is that you get a new Fit Note and submit it, ideally for a longer period than one week and the request a Mandatory Reconsideration of the Decision to close your claim, otherwise, you will need to make a new claim.

Either way, you need to take more responsibility for ensuring a current Fit Note is with the DWP, my understanding is that the DWP stopped sending out reminders for Fit Notes several years ago so you were lucky that they contacted you.
