Amputee PIP claim was created by Juno*
Hi all,
I'm about to begin the application for PIP for a family member who was in a serious road traffic accident a few months ago and suffered a through the knee disarticulation (amputation). I've downloaded the guides, had reports from the OT and psychologist compiled that detail the level of disability and read through as much as the internet can throw at me!
Has anyone successfully claimed for PIP as an amputee and happy to share their experience?
Thanks!

Hi Juno*
Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is
Welcome to Benefits and Work .
PIP is not awarded because of the condition but rather the limitations that result and prevent a claimant from completing a range of everyday activities. Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for a better understanding of the criteria you will need to meet.

Hello Juno,
Many years ago at the age of 17/18 after a road accident, my brother who is an amputee just below knee applied for DLA and received High Rate Mobility for a limited time. When it came to renewing he was turned down, the reason being he cycled, walked his dog, passed his HGV Class 1. In other words because he had shown guts and stamina and would not allow his disability to get in the way he was refused. I don't think he went on to appeal. He is 58 now and has never bothered reapplying.
So whilst it is definitely worth applying for PIP, be aware of the downfalls and be prepared to argue the limitations your family member has and what he/she can or more to the point can't do.
PIP is much more difficult than DLA was.
Good luck.

Hi Juno"
I certainly do know there are several members of B&W that have had amputations, but as Gary has advised it is not the condition, but the difficulties that someone experiences that counts. Furry give you wise advice in that you need to explain very clearly the limitations and there can be pitfalls.
Don't assume the person reading your form has any understanding of what it is like.

Update - my dad has been awarded Standard daily living, and enhanced mobility judging by the back payment awarded today. Still awaiting letter to confirm award length. The guides were an invaluable resource when completing the form and latterly when he had his telephone assessment. Thank you so much!

That is great news Juno and I am pleased to hear you found the guides to be as good as we think they are. Thanks for letting us know!
