Do I HAVE to claim ESA all over again with UC?

Hello All.

I hope you are all well as can be under the present circumstances.
I am feeling very stressed and worried to say the least.
Here is my scenario which I find myself in and in somewhat of a quandry:

I am receiving Contributory ESA in the Support Group and have been since 2010 for 10 years or so.
I am also receiving PIP at the Daily Living Standard Rate (although being Reviewed at the moment).
My Wife is not on any benefits at the moment, but has now been made Redundant after having been on Furlough for 8 Months
She is applying for Universal Credit, which means it has to be a joint application with myself as well, which seems to be the rule!
On applying, the form said I would cease getting Income related ESA (which I am not receiving anyway - No problem!)
It is now asking all my illnesses etc and saying I need a 'FIT Note' etc.I was asked not to send these in since 2011!
My question is the following:
Do I now have to go through the rigmarole of applying for my Contributory ESA all over again, even though I have been receiving it since 2010?
Also the last day of my wifes notice is on the 20/12/2020. Can she apply for Universal Credit application in before this date, while serving her Notice Period?
I have started my UC application although not finished it, do I have to go through with it if it means losing my Contributory ESA Support Group Claim?
I was under the impression that Contributory ESA and PIP were not affected by a UC Claim.
Any thoughts or guidance would greatly help my stress levels!
Thanks you so much for any help.

Hi Neildry9

Your wife may be able to claim 'New Style ESA' www.gov.uk/guidance/new-style-employment...-style-esa-to-expect

Providing she has at least 50 weeks of NI Contributions in both of the Tax Years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 then she can make a claim for New Style ESA, this is a Contribution Based benefit so your household income, with the exception of any pension income she receive, is disregarded as are your assets and savings.

I would advise both your wife and yourself to seek help from your local welfare rights worker who will be able to take all your details into consideration before you make any errors.

Hi Gary, thanks for your reply.

It is my wife that will be needing to claim UC because of her redundancy. She is not ill, just out of work and also we privately rent our home, so would claim for help with the rent within the UC claim as well.

Because it would have to be a joint applicant, I am worried it may put my long term claim of Contributory ESA Support Group in jeopardy or they cancel it altogether? Would I have to this ESA payment cancelled and have to go through the whole process of claiming ESA from scratch all over again? Would they (DWP) cancel my ESA once I start filling in my part of the online Universal Credit claim?
I do not want to go for the New style ESA, but would I be made to, as part of my wife's Universal Credit Claim? I could do without the trauma of having to reclaim to be quite frank. For reference I am on the Standard Living Rate of PIP as well.

Apologies for the length of the query.
Thank you for your help.
