Need Clarification re Moving from ESA/WTC to UC was created by CHUNKY
Hi
I am asking about a simple question:
I am on Conts ESA and WTC/CTC.
Am I am correct in saying that in the next 2-3 years I will be moved over to UC which is mandatory?
Thanks

Hi synapse321
The simple answer to your question is that we do not yet know.
Prior to the lockdown last year, there was and as far as I know still is a Universal Credit managed migration pilot in Harrogate to move claimants from legacy benefits to UC. This pilot, however, was paused in March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. There were 10,000 claimants in the pilot area, prior to pausing the pilot just under 80 households were participating in the pilot, and that 13 households had been moved on to Universal Credit.

Thanks for your reply.
Let me ask in a different way: Is it the Governments plan to migrate everyone to UC from legacy benefits?
Would a change of Government have any bearing on this i.e. Did Labour indicate they would reverse those proposed changes?
Thanks

Hi synapse321
The answer to your question is yes, it is the Governments plan to eventually move everyone on a legacy benefit on to UC, the last I heard was by 2024 but this date keeps moving backwards.
Personally I think that UC has gone too far for any reverse change to happen now, on the 27th of this month claimants in receipt of SDP will now go over to UC if they have a change of circumstances. I am not aware of any Labour manifesto about reversing UC, you would have to check on Labours official website.

If your savings are over £16k you will be ineligible for UC?
Even this talk about transitional protection will not be applicable either?

Hi synapse321
As UC is a means tested benefit, any savings over £16k would mean that you would not be eligible to claim UC.
Transitional protection will not help you if you have over £16k in savings.
