UC50: 'about your health condition' - how long? was created by singram
Many thanks in advaice for reading. Are there any examples of answers to this initial question about your conditions, on mental health grounds? I have read the benefits and work UC/ESA guides for mental health conditions thoroughly and consulted other advice and have typed up draft answers to all the questions. I'm not confident about how succinct I should be in the intial explanation of my conditions.
I have complex mental health conditions that affect my mood and functioning very variably & the road to my various diagnoses has been long. I'm trying not to write a life story but it's hard to keep it succinct. I always struggle to keep anything less than a page and a half of typed A4, not including things I might move to 'additional information'. Should I do my best to edit it down or is it okay for it to be very long?
I'm also worried it sounds like I am exaggerating so would be viewed less sympathetically, though I am doing my best to be honest and straightforward.
warning: mention of self harm

I'm concerned about how to phrase that I would be at risk of harming myself if i was expected to do activities (I can never predict if or when I might be able to do something for a long list or reasons) in case it sounds like a manipulative threat. I have EUPD which puts me at a high risk of suicide and this is supported in the NICE guidelines. I also have ADHD and generalised anxiety disorder.

Maybe I could write up a symptom diary and attach that in lieu of some of the attempts to explain. It's hard to understand myself and I often forget or dont even notice that other people don't find things hard the way I do.

Hello Singram,
Don't worry about writing too much, provided it is all good content and helps to paint a picture of you Just remember that anything you put can be used against you, so do double check that you don't put things which can be read in two different ways.
And YES do include any increased risks due to work related activiites. That is one route into the LCWRA (old support group). Basically they are not supposed to ask you to do something which will make your condition worse.

Hi again Singram,
Symptom diaries are good. Many people struggle to write them, but if you can, then go for it! You make a very good point regarding how difficult you find things compared to other people - do you have a friend who can help you with the form who might gently point some of these out to you?
Think of the form as your opportunity to tell them why you cannot or would struggle to work. And remember supporting evidence from other people is always good.
