Question: Is a sat nav considered a navigation aid?
I am helping my friend fill out pip form, she drives a mobility car (she has cerebral Palsy) and gets lost easily without it. She is unable to read a map, and gets confused on an unfamiliar route as she get disorientated due to her condition plus she gets panic attacks. Journeys would be impossible without it even with it journeys do take longer as she can still get lost. On foot or in a mobility scooter someone always needs to be with her in unfamiliar surroundings. Would she be classed as someone who “cannot follow the route of an unfamiliar journey without another person, assistance dog or orientation aid”
Would appreciate some advice.

Hi Sarah ,

Welcome to Benefits and Work. Have looked at the guides, the guide to filling out PIP forms can be found here:

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants-2

Unfortunately sat nav is not a 'navigation aid' for PIP, unless it is especially made for a disabled person. Points can be gained under PIP if an activity can be done reliably. This can include where the activity takes over twice as long as a person without disability. You have explained that your friend takes a long time on a journey, which suggests that your friend may need to be accompanied. However you haven't stated why your friend needs someone with her during unfamiliar journeys. In order go qualify for points in this section you will need to show that your friend needs to be accompanied to remain safe, achieve the journey in an acceptable way, and within the reasonable time, as stated above, as well as repeatedly across the day, as required.
It may be helpful to think about whether your friend fits within the above test for familiar journeys as well. The rules, for all activities, provide that points can be awarded if the relevant activity can't be done for more than 50% of the time. This means that even if eg journeys can be done safely and alone one day, but not for the rest of the week , then points can still be awarded. It is important therefore to consider the overall pattern of all PIP activities.

I hope this helps. I am sure that your friend very much appreciates your help with her PIP application.
