Can I ask PIP PAPER ASSESSMT,not on members Guide? was created by VIA
Hello dear fellow members,
I would like to request a PIP PAPER-BASED ASSESSMENT instead of their phone assessment.
I am confused though because -
no offence intended as I am very grateful for help and guideline on this forum -
I cannot find on the members guides anything that says we can request a PIP paper based assessment instead of a phone assessment,
(unless I am not looking at the right guide).
Yet on this forum a few times, and I am very grateful for it, it is mentioned that we are more likely to be successful if we can get our GP or other medical professional to write a letter that says exactly that I would suffer ‘Overwhelming Psychological Distress) if I were to have a phone assessment.
— I would be very grateful if someone would guide me to the members guide that confirms the above, if there is one.
Ps I Would very much like to as for a paper based PIP assessment instead of the phone assessment because of overwhelming psychological distress even though I do not take depression and anxiety tablets and my disability increases my anxiety/depression (so maybe I would not be successful on that ground even if my GP provided me with that letter)
and also because of all my lower joints are full of osteoarthritis, I need now a hip replacement, knees replacements, have OA on lower back, have very severe valgum knees, my legs are severely deformed, torn knee meniscus and much more but a cam impingment on one hip makes it impossible for me to sit down and flex my hip and painkillers cannot control my pain and I know a phone consultation could last 1 hours maybe more, but me I am constantly in pain and cannot see myself coping with a 5 minutes telephone assessment let alone 1 hour or more.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best of luck in your assessment if you have one due!
Good health to you all!

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Olympia
You can ask for a paper-based assessment, but you are unlikely to be offered on without showing that it would cause you Overwhelming Psychological Distress. To prove this you will probably need to get a letter from your GP or another medical professional. Even with a backup letter the IAS/Capita often argue that they still need to speak to a claimant to make a decision.
I should just warn you that because you don't take any medication (for depression or anxiety) - you may struggle to explain to them that you reach the threshold for OCD. So you will need to explain that.
Regarding not being able to sit for a telephone assessment - they may say well you could lay in bed and have one or they will pause to give you more time. Just warning you of the sorts of reasons they may use not to give a paper-based assessment. However, that doesn't mean you can't try and ask for one.
