PIP and caring responsibilities was created by CAKensington
Hello,
I am noticing that clients who have PIP awards are having these superseded when they mention that they care for someone else, no matter what the medical evidence and client's evidence about their difficulties. Is there any new guidance to decision makers on this as it seems like a new approach? Thanks

Hi Arantxa Gaba,

I am not aware of any specific guidance to Decision Makers, but DWP is always looking at claims, and will be aware of contradictions. On the face of it, if a person claims to have disabilities, such to the extent that they want to claim PIP, and then say that they look after someone else this of course is contradictory. Disabled people have children, and the children need to be looked after. What caring does the PIP claimant do? - For example, if DWP claim that the claimant cooks for her child, it is likely that the claimant will score zero under the 'preparing food' descriptor. However, if the claimant only reheats ready meals, or the child prepares the meal and claimant just supervises, this will not preclude points. Thus, it is important to consider any conflict, and carefully explain this. The same is with caring for an adult. There are instances where one member of a couple has physical problems, and the other has mental health difficulties. The first person can prompt/support the other, and the second can assist with all the physical tasks. A child might need 'looking after' but in reality might be a young carer.

Explaining apparent conflict and consistency are important when filling out forms or attending assessments.

I hope this helps.
