UC and Pip was created by debathome
Hi My daughter who is now 22 years old was diagnosed with Selective Mutism when she was 5 years old, she still doesn't speak out side the family. She is also Dyslexic. She is on the waiting list to find out if she also has Autism, as other members of our family have ADHD and Asperger's. My daughter has made a claim to UC, who maintain that she could work, We have asked for a mandatory reconsideration but that failed, we are in the process of going to a tribunal. In the mean time PIP have changed my daughter benefit from Enhanced daily living to Standard and given her Enhanced Mobility instead of Standard. Does anyone have any advice for us please? I feel both UC and PIP have an hidden agenda, This is adding a lot of stress on my daughter, her Anxiety is really high at the moment.

Hello Debbie,
You really must feel as if you are being hit from all directions. I do feel sorry for you, and wish I had an easy answer.
You clearly know about the appeals process, and it sounds as if you are doing the right thing there. Use our guides and get all the help you can from someone who is outside the family and not so emotionally exhausted by it all. If you do get any additional formal diagnosis for your daughter that will help with future re-applications or reviews, so keep any potentially useful letters. And just keep an eye open for those overlaps between the two benefits. We know the DWP do compare what you have put on both forms,
But my advise would also be very benefit un-focused - try not to let these forms dominate your life. They are real, they have to be done, but also have non form time with your daughter. Plan a girlie night in every so often, or whatever works for you both, so that you continue seeing her as your daughter and not the subject of forms and letters.
Take care,
Catherine

Thank you Catherine for your kind comments. I do feel that the benefit section do purposely bombard us in the hope that we crumble, which makes me more determined to fight the system, that is unfair to people that are in need of help. We now have an appointment at the adult Autism clinic at the end of this month which as come through quiet quick. I will keep you all posted in the event it may help someone else.

Debbie, if I had to sum up why I do what I do, it would be because ‘it is unfair to people that are in need of help’ (and at this point I have to stop myself going onto a rant).
I am really pleased to hear about your appointment at the clinic – it is possible that they may be able guide you someone who has particular expertise in the area of benefits and Autism. Having done their assessment they may also be willing to give you some supporting evidence to add to your appeal. If you think they are going to be receptive to giving you this support, tell them where you are in particular need of additional evidence. E.g. can they confirm in writing how they would expect your daughter to communicate in a work place with people she does not know and trust.
If you have not done so, you might want to look at these appeal decisions, aka case law, it is possible that you might find some of the arguments within the cases are relevant to your daughter.

Hi Debbie, I sympathise with your journey; my husband was diagnosed with Asperger's a few years ago in his 60s, it explained sooo much, but the clinic didn't give any help. Worth if you haven't already found them, looking at books from Jessica Kingsley Publishers among others to help everyone if you daughter does get a diagnosis. It was only a private counsellor he saw who put us onto these. Very best wishes, Denby
