Renewal PIP Mobility was created by ElaineBeet
Can anyone give me advice on completing my renewal PIP claim. It relates to mobility and use of a wheelchair . Do you have to be in it full time? Can you walk a little bit and then have to get in because of pain breathless etc or is it stand and walk so many metres without pain etc and where would a wheelchair fit in. Thanks

Hi ElaineBeet,
Thanks for you post. The members guides give lots if helpful information about all of the PIP activities including mobility. Please have look at these if not done already.
To gain points under any PIP activity, you will need to show that you have difficulties for the majority of the time. You also need to consider whether you can do the activity reliably, which means safely, to an acceptable standard, within a reasonable time and repeatedly.
In respect of mobility, it is important to also take account of manner of walking, falls/stumbles, fatigue and 'severe discomfort' which includes breathlessness, pain, and anything else similar that could affect walking.
When severe discomfort kicks in, this is the limit to your walking ability in terms of PIP, even if you can actually take further steps. If you walk over twice as slow than an able bodied friend, or fall over, these will all limit your walking ability for Pip.
I note that you are asking about using a wheelchair. This suggests to me that you already have significant limitations in walking. Presumably this is something that has become worse since your previous PIP award. You will need to explain this. Think about why you have to use a chair- is it pain, legs give way, breathlessness etc? How far can you go before needing the chair, and when can you next walk? What happens if you do walk a bit further? Is there a place eg post box, local shop that you do walk to? How many stops do you take, and how long? What is the overall time you take and what is the distance? Maybe a friend can pace this out if need be.By considering these questions you will be able to make a judgment about how your walking ability fits into PIP. Also, I appreciate that people who can walk short distances often push themselves to try and retain some fitness etc. Think about the normal time/distance you would walk, rather than times when you might want to push yourself. This is likely to provide an artificial ability, and it us unlikely to reflect your ability for the 'majority of time'.
I hope this helps.Good luck with your renewal!
