DWP Financial review? was created by JeanCannon
Hi hope all as well as can be?
My husband had a call today out of the blue from a lady from the DWP.
She said there was nothing to worry about, but every so often they check people's finances and benefits. She said that he should have received a letter a couple of weeks ago informing him of the call, but he had not. The lady asked what we had in our bank accounts so obviously my husband told her and then she said that what flagged this up was a £50,000. balance in our account in 2018. Well we were stunned, we've never had any where near£10,000. let alone 50,000.
She has asked for all our bank statements for the last 3 years which is fine, but I find this all very worrying. Please can someone advise?
Thank you

Hi Jaycie,
The DWP do do such checks and they do ask for bank statements so it is all possible although all dead scary. By the sounds of it you have nothing to hide.
However, a little caution might be advised here, just in case it was not the DWP. I would give them a ring and check that they have indeed requested the information and make sure you send the statements to the address at the top of the one of their official letters.
Please do come back to us if you wish,
Catherine

Thank you.
I'm puzzled about the £50,000 they say flagged up.

I am too Jaycie, which is why I urged a degree of caution.
It is possible that there was some admin error at the DWP and they got you mixed up with someone else? I don't know, but the only time I have had first hand experience of something like this the DWP took the bank statements at face value and moved on from there.
So, hard as it might be, I would say try not to worry.
Although this is getting close to being outside of the remit of this forum, do come back to us and let us know what happens.

Hi Jaycie
You have to be aware of scams, there are loads about. The first questions I would ask, did the lady give her name and department? Did you give the lady any of your personal details such as DOB, address, NINO to verify who you were under GDPR?
Did the lady inform you as to what department she was phoning from? I would contact the DWP to see if the call was genuine. If it was not then contact your bank and inform them of the phone call and potential scam.
I would say never, never give any personal information to someone who cold calls you, never give your name or NINO or DOB. I always ask who they are trying to contact without giving away my name, if they refuse to answer I just put down the phone.
DWP have on occasions contacted claimants, so I am not saying it was a scam but for peace of mind contact DWP to get confirmation the call was genuine.
