Universal credit/ESA was created by richmond
Hi thank you in advance for any advice.
I am accepting voluntary redundancy from my part time job, it seems the best option with my health issues and sick leave, I am already on the PIP standard rate for both.
Can you please tell me what is my best way forward, do I apply for U/C or ESA or both? if so do I need a medical sick note and how long should I get it for, 6 months or longer?
Many thanks
Sam

Hi sam
NS ESA is a contributory benefit, not a means tested one. You would be making a claim on the basis that you are not fit for work so you will need to provide a 'Fit Note' from your GP.
However, I would recommend that you put your information into one of the online benefit calculators before you make any claim, you may find that you would receive more money making a claim for Universal Credit but it would depend on your circumstances.

If you have at least 50 weeks of NI Contributions in both of the Tax Years 2017-18 and 2018-19 then you can make a claim for New Style ESA.
If you are awarded Limited Capability for Work then the NE ESA is only payable for a year, if you receive Limited Capability for Work Related Activity then it is payable for as long as you meet the criteria.
Our UC and ESA claim guide explains the criteria that you will need to meet.

New Style ESA is a Contribution Based benefit and is not means tested with the exception of pension income which can reduce the amount that you receive.
The Income Related benefit that goes with NS ESA is Universal Credit.
