Aspergers Dilemma was created by Ultravox
Hi,
I am in receipt of ESA(support group) and PIP (Daily Living-Standard)
I am happy with my current awards.
I suffer from Depression, Anxiety, OCD (Rituals) all severe in nature. And on Medication.
Since these awards, after waiting two and a half years, last year I had an assessment for Aspergers (ASD) at the request of my Psychiatrist as he thought there might be a link between between Aspergers and my OCD.

The assessment came back showing that I have a diagnoses of Aspergers (ASD).
Although my conditions OCD etc.. above remain the same.
Do you think it necessary for me to inform the DWP of my Aspergers as it is a lifelong condition?
Would this diagnoses mean a change of circumstance?
Should I wait until my next Review(s) and then include the Aspergers diagnose then?
Thank you for any helpful advice you may be able to give.
Kindest Regards,
Robert.

Hi Rob100

The DWP always ask people to inform them if there has been a change in circumstances about their medical condition, but in reality, they are only interested if it means you have seen an improvement and they don't have to pay you as much. If you believe that the symptoms from your Aspergers diagnosis are making it more difficult to manage your daily living - then you can report it and they will trigger an earlier review - which may or may not lead to an improved award.

If you are satisfied with your current award you could choose to inform them at your next review and say that you have been learning and understanding how it affects you.

Hi Rob100. Welcome to the world of ASC. My husband got his Aspergers diagnosis in his late 60s. In case you didn't get any info, bear in mind that Asperger's is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 and Autism Act 2009. So if you experience discrimination or lack of services that you need, you do have these to call on. Jessica Kingsley Publishers also produce many very helpful books. I hope this doesn't happen to you, but my husband has struggled worse with his mental health since the diagnosis, as we have had a lot of changes in life that haven't gone smoothly, and it has been very hard to access suitable help for him. Stick up for appropriate support as much as you can, prevention of deterioration is much better than it happening.
Very best wishes, Denby

Hi Denby,
Thank you for the valuable information.
Since having my diagnosis I have found that it has helped me understand why I am like I am and shed some light on aspects of my life from my childhood/school years up to now (I'm in my late 50's) so it was very positive in that respect. I nearly gave up on getting my diagnosis but was persuaded to wait and have it by my Physchiatrist/GP. What having a diagnosis hasn't done is lessened my associated Mental Health issues which apparently have a Co Morbidity with Aspergers especially my OCD and although I am on medication why they only have limited efficacy.
Kind Regards, Rob100.
