Is ESA stopped when I reach pension age? was created by calmbrain1
I have been receiving contributory ESA for many years.
The only other benefit which I receive is Housing Benefit to cover my rent.

I am reaching the state pension age of 66 in 2 months and I have filled in the online form to claim the state pension.

Every year at this time I receive a letter from the job centre which deals with my ESA payments which tells me how much my ESA will go up from April due to inflation (if benefits were not frozen that year.)

A similar letter arrived recently which told me that my ESA will go up (with inflation) this month to £131.30 a week.

The letter also said that 5 days before my 66th birthday my ESA will go down to £114.10 a week which is a reduction of  £17.20 a week.

The letter said that this is because of an age change (This must refer to me reaching the pension age.)

At no point does the letter say that my ESA will be completely stopped because I will be eligible to receive a state pension.

Can you please tell me if my ESA will be stopped (as I will need to apply for pension credit.)

Thanks so much for your help,
Brian

Hi calmbrain1

I assume from your post that you are in receipt of both IR ESA and CB ESA as you would not get an enhanced disability premium (£17.10 pw) if you were only getting CB ESA, this premium stops once you reach SP age. There is not enough information from your post to work out your entitlements, I assume that you are not in receipt of DLA/PIP or you have a partner.

When you reach State Retirement Age your ESA will stop so your taxable income will be your State Pension. There may be complications if you have a partner who is younger than you, due to changes in the regulations which came into play a few years ago (mixed aged couples).

You can get a State Pension forecast from the following: www.gov.uk/check-state-pension

You may be eligible to apply for Pension Credit Guarantee but it would depend on your circumstances: www.gov.uk/pension-credit

You need to seek advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation who can take all your circumstances into consideration. You can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with benefit query by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of local agencies.
