PIP- preparing cooking a meal. was created by MrFibro
Hi to all,

I've just started to do some work on my PIP review form. And what I'm doing it seems a bit contradictive. Reason/s being is this:

I use a variation of aids and appliances to prepare & to cook a meal. But the problem is this! over the past few years my health has declined considerable, hence i n=have been getting help and support with family members to help me with this activity.

ie preparing food meat vegetables etc, and also cooking the food too. The frequency of this can vary a little ( i know DWP love the word vary) so it varies from say 3 to 4 times a week that i get the support.

Other times i struggle with great difficulty, but I'm having now to rely on family more for the activity.

So I'm trying to reach a decision, where i can score at least 4 points with this activity. Should i go down the route of...even though i can prepare and cook a meal with the use of aids and appliances, but now i am struggling to do it using them, as my conditions have deteriorated, and explain in great details why etc.

And hope they may decide that i do need help and support from others and allow me a score of 4 points!

Or do i go down the route and say yes even though i use aids and appliances i do on some days prepare and cook a simple meal bla bla bla. But ! i do receive help from others to prepare and cook a meal and go into details why and the frequency of this help etc.

I'm finding it difficult to draw some line here between i can do it with aids sometimes and i do it sometimes with aids, but i get physical support too.

it does say in the guide if you can do it, you may still get higher points if you need help, even if you are not getting it!

Any advice from mods or from others would be grateful.

regards.

mrfibrospondodysthmatic,
I think the best way to consider preparing food (and indeed any descriptor,) is to consider the majority of days rule. (This is regulation 7 PIP regs 2013.)
Basically you need to consider whether you have difficulties on any part of the day, excluding a trivial few minutes , this will count. If you have equal difficulties with more than one activity within the descriptor then the one that should entitle points is the one with the highest points value. If you have difficulties in more than one area, but one activity gives difficulty more often than another, your correct points value is for the difficulty that occurs most often.
DWP are not known for their generosity, and will often just award 2pts for 'aid/appliance' so make sure that you properly explain higher points value activities, to help get the correct points.
Remember that all activities have to bd done safely, to an acceptable standard, in a reasonable time ( no more than twice as long as non disabled person) and repeatedly. So if pain or fatigue cause problems or perhaps poor grip causes safety issues these should be taken into account. If you use a gadget to assist, but there is still a need for help, due to safety, time taken etc then you should fall within the supervision category.
All four criteria need to be met.
If you require so much help that effectively the other person does the cooking, then the full 8 points should be awarded as you can not cook (under the definition of PIP.)
Think about your disabilities and exactly how they cause difficulty with cooking. What help do you need and why? What happens when you don't have help? Match this with descriptor activities, whilst remembering Reg 7 per above.
I hope this helps.
