School having difficulty in structuring a letter.. was created by paulcornwall
We are reporting a CoC for my daughters DLA. She currently receives Higher rate care and lower rate mobility. This award was given after a fight resulting in a tribunal. Her current award expires next year. Her health and needs have deteriorated considerably and believe we should get higher rate mobility. I am aware the DM could also reduce the aware when reporting CoC. However, do the amount of extra support and reduced mobility I feel strongly she should be awarded the higher rate.
We are gathering the letter from the various professionals in my daughters care. I have asked school to write a supporting letter but they have never written a supporting letter for DLA. I have explained it may feel odd, but they should concentrate on what my daughter can not do or what she finds difficult. Its the opposite of what there natural instinct is.
I believe one the kind admin directed me to some guidance a couple of months back, but I cant seem to find it. Could someone direct me to some guidance and criteria for higher rate DLA so the school has something to work with?
Kind regards
Paul.

School are trying there best to get a letter together for us. The main reason for this letter is for a CoC. She has a substantial decrease in her mobility and a new diagnosis of a rare bone disease, where her body attacks and destroys its own bone. This causes her substantial pain, and her mobility is limited to the house and the odd outing in her wheelchair. The pain has been so bad she has been unable to attend school. On the rare occasion when my daughter is able to attend school (perhaps 1 morning a month), she makes the most of her mobility however over exerts herself then taking weeks to recover. Being bed bound until the inflammation subsides. So, the majority of the time she is unable to walk less than 10-20meters however on the odd occasion she attends school she over exerts herself and perhaps able to manage 50m over the whole day.
My daughters school is very small and as such rarely deal with DLA letters, the help from here has been great, but I believe the letter needs amending slightly, especially the last paragraph.
Could a member of the team take a look at the letter and see how the wording could be improved. Baring in mind we are looking for High rate mobility and care.
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to you to provide a supporting statement for a DLA application for one of my pupils, RETRACTED. RETRACTED is currently in year 5 at school and is experiencing significant difficulties in many areas of her life. As well as her CRMO which is complex, she is on the Autistic spectrum pathway (ASD) because she has social and communication needs in school and is awaiting diagnosis from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), she is working at least 3 years behind academically.
As it stands, the areas that RETRACTED needs support with at school are:
• Needs prompting to be able to take nutrition, this is usually by the TA or class teacher. She wouldn’t eat unless we did this.
• Needs supervision or prompting to be able to manage toilet needs. We give her medication to prevent her bowel from impacting and encourage her to use the toilet regularly. This is usually the class teacher or TA.
• Needs communication support to be able to express or understand complex verbal information. We have provided visual prompts and support to help RETRACTED express verbal instructions (pain and well being indicators) We use visual timetables and now and next boards to be able to help her understand more complex instructions. When in school, she works with an adult as much as possible.
• Needs prompting to be able to read or understand basic written information. RETRACTED is very behind in her learning, whilst she is able to read, she lacks the comprehension to gain understanding so is supported by an adult in all lessons.
• Needs social support to be able to engage with other people. Being on the ASD pathway, and the increasing social anxiety causing panic attacks, RETRACTED often requires close supervision and small group interventions (such as Trauma Informed Schools sessions, Lego therapy etc).
• Can stand and then move more than 50 metres but no more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. Whilst RETRACTED is able to move without support, it does cause significant pain afterwards and quite often leaves her unable to come into school afterwards.

Hello Paul,
Much as we would love to be able to be able to give the sort of the help you are asking for it is beyond the scope of this site.
You can of course contact a local benefits adviser who may be able to do just this for you.
This can be a helpful link in locating someone.
The one thing I will say though is that your introductory paragraph painted a clear picture of your daughter’s problems with walking. I would urge you to also write a supporting letter explaining things as you have done so there. Don’t worry too much about sounding professional, write as her father about the help she needs from you and other people and about her daily life. I appreciate that this can be a bit of a tall order, but you could use our PIP diary forms to give you the information you need.
PIP resources You will find them just above the heading ‘Webinars’.
I am sorry that we are not able to give you the help you hoped for
