Hi all,

Would really appreciate your advice.

I have been awarded 0 points for mental health difficulties and am prepping to request MR (letter was sent out to me on the 17th).

I have been too afraid to ask my GP for a letter, as I know there's a lot of stigma and it'd affect my interactions with them in future. I did request my medical notes though and took them to a private GP for a full assessment (quite expensive).

The GP filled in the from from this website, she ticked yes and no and added some comments like 'needs prompting due to x,y,z'. There's nothing the DWP could query on this I think and it's pretty fair.

I also sent in a form from Mind which asks the GP to comment on various areas, and in this she's listed evidence from the notes I've sent her and drawn conclusions, but in some areas she's also wrtten:

"Danielle has x,y,z symptom when doing this and that (as disclosed to me by patient today).

Therefore she needs prompting and supervision with a b c need"

Question is - is there anything I could ask the GP to add to the form that might help strengthen things, but without of course leading or unfairly influcening?

Also, should I only submit one of the forms? I have both and don't have to submit both.

Thanks!

Hello Danielle,

It sounds as if you have done a great job! Unless you have reservations about what is written on one of the forms I would recommend sending in both. It can only add weight to your MR.

It is very hard for us to answer your question without having detailed knowledge of your condition and how it effects you. I suppose I would say is there anything significant which you are relying on to get you points and for which you do not have evidence. If so, if you can get that it might help even further. I would not worry too much about leading or unfairly influencing - your GP is an educated person so should be able to make up her own mind as to whether or not what you are asking for is reasonable, but she is also likely to be a very busy person so might well appreciate some guidance as to what you are hoping will be included in the letter.

I hope you are successful in your claim, and do not be discouraged by the fact that you were initially scored 0 points. many people start at that point and go on to win their correct award.

Catherine

Hi Catherine,

Thank you very much for your reply and kind advice.

I received the report from the private GP and at first I thought all was fine (I tend to get confused).

Looking at it again, I think there is a problem.

I gave the GP a form containing tick boxes (yes or no to certain needs) downloaded from this forum, which asks the GP to tick 'can do this unaided' 'needs supervision' etc and more.

The problem is, she hasn't understood where it's OK to tick more than one box and where it isn't. Some boxes are exclusive and shouldn't be combined, I think.

If she ticks more than one - which will the DWP believe?
Which should I ask her to change?

I am freaking out that this evidence (which was expensive to get) could go against me.

For example:

Managing treatments she has ticked all of below:
needs help
needs help 3 hours but no more than...
needs help 7 hours but no more than...
Needs help more than 14 hours etc...

This seems wrong?

For nutrition, she has ticked both 'can take nutrition unaided' and 'needs prompting' and 'needs supervision''. She has written in text that I need prompting and supervision.

For prepping food she has ticked all of:
- needs prompting
- needs supervision
but also 'cannot prepare and cook food' with a comment saying I need prompting and supervision. So contradiction I think?

I need to understand which to ask her to change and get it right as I'm being asked to pay again for these corrections.

Help very much appreciated, thanks!

Hello Danielle,

Why do things never go smoothly?

I am afraid you need to go back to your GP and very politely point out that she has ticked boxes which are mutually exclusive. Give as an example that it is not possible to both need supervision, prompting or assistance to be able to manage therapy that takes no more than 3.5 hours a week AND the same for more than 3.5 but no more the 7 hours a week.

I do think if she is being pedantic what she has ticked in the cooking activity might make sense – you need prompting and supervision to prepare or cook a simple meal, but you cannot prepare and cook food. But then her written comment throws doubt on that.

Given that from what you have said, it is your GP who has made the error, I would think it is unreasonable of her request additional payment to correct her mistake.

I think if I was in your position I would tell her what I think are the correct boxes for her to tick, she is of course free to think differently, but it might be a helpful starting point.

I am sorry I can’t be of more help,
Catherine

Hi Catherine,

I find myself in a similar predicament. My GP is doing me a pip support letter, but i gave my GP examples of how im affected with the activities, and how they cross reference with my multiple health conditions.

My GP has said basically its too winding to do what i want, but my GP said that she would give reference in her support letter.

Just wondering what she actually meant by that.

example ..Mr Fibro cannot prep , cook a meal as sitting standing even for a very short time causes him too much pain, discomfort due to degenerative disk disease.

And the same for all the other activities all except a few don't apply to me.

Regards.
