PIP Review - Covid and Bereavement was created by Kev68
Hi, I have received my PIP review form and I'm just wondering to what extent I should mention the following:

1-Exacerbated MH issues due to Covid
2-Exacerbated MH issues due to family bereavement (not Covid related)

How do assessors view the above? Do they think mentioning Covid is opportunistic? Its been well documented the effect on the nations mental health but I'm always wary of including stuff, even if its true, if it might not be viewed favourably or make a difference.

How do assessors view family bereavement? Is it worth mentioning it at all? Many thanks, all the best, Kev

Hi Kev68

If your mental health has deteriorated since the last review and the impact is relevant to the specific PIP criteria - then you should say so.

We haven't heard any comments regarding an assessor being sympathetic or dismissive of someone's mental health deteriorating due to the circumstances of Covid or bereavement, but depending on the circumstances there may be an assumption that the impact may be 'short - term' in both cases (which of course isn't necessarily true) and they may make a recommendation for a shorter-term award.

Whether a claimant is filling out the first PIP form or filling out a review form, the most important thing is keeping in mind the PIP criteria - so if something is not directly relevant - don't put it in.

Many thanks BIS. Based on your reply my gut instinct is telling me to leave them out but I will have a think about it with respect to the descriptors. All the best.

Hello Kev68,

One of the PIP rules is that a condition you must have had a condtion for 3 months and reasonably expect it to last for at least another 9 months.

Clearly you will have some idea of when your symptoms got worse, but I think if you want them to be taken into consideration in your assessment you will need to show that they are likely to last for the next 9 months.

Hi Kev. Obviously I don’t know all your circumstances, but I told them I was CEV and hadn’t left the house in a year because people are idiots and I didn’t feel safe. I also gave that as reasoning for them to do a paper-based decision, and not a F2F.
Saying that Covid has exacerbated MH stuff is entirely reasonable in my book. And who knows how long this will go on for…. Nobody knows, but prob another couple of years ..
It won’t do you any harm mentioning it, but I would focus on the long-term issues as the foundation..
Unfortunately with the bereavement they may count it as a ‘one off’ which is callous, but likely :-(
