DLA. What happens when I reach retirement age?

Hello.
I am on ESA and DLA and will receive a full pension ( I think ) this year. I'm not clear on what happens with DLA but assume it will stop. I have been receiving DLA for twenty years approx. I have not been asked to change to PIP yet. I would prefer to claim Attendance Allowance if it's possible.

Hello Rambling Ted,

Your ESA will stop when your State Pension starts. Make sure that you check out whether or not you are also entitled Pension Credit.

Your DLA will continue as it is, although you might at some point be asked to move over to PIP. You do not say why you would prefer to have Attendance Allowance rather than DLA and I would strongly advise you to seek personal benefits advice before triggering a move, particularly if you receive a mobility element of DLA.

Best wishes for your retirement,
Catherine

Thanks. I would prefer to stay on DLA but from what I've read it will only continue if I was born before 1948. I might get asked to move to PIP before I am 66. If was a choice between PIP and AA , I would prefer AA as it seems less hassle and easier to claim , I would expect to the benefit amount between the two to be about the same.

Arrrrr, I am with you now Rambling Ted.

You will stay on your DLA until at sometime they potentially ask you to apply for PIP. If at that time you don't apply for PIP your DLA will simply stop. You can obviously apply for AA instead of PIP at that point. AA and PIP are assessed on very different criteria, so I would repeat what I said about getting personal benefits advise before you commit to a particular action.

I have to agree with you that in my personal experience I have had far fewer issues applying for AA than for PIP, although I would add that many PIP claims go through without problems.

Once again, I wish you a very happy retirement,
Catherine
