Hi Sara1
The basic weekly component for ESA (income based) for someone over 25 is currently £74-70 then there is the Support Group element which is a further £39-40. If you are eligible, there may be additional money (premiums) which may increase your total amount.
Premiums only apply to income based benefits, so Contribution based benefit can not include this, hence there could be a difference.
Similarly if for example, someone had a small of amount of income this could reduce a payment of Income Based ESA, as this could be deducted. Income will not normally be deducted from Contribution based ESA, but money from occupational pensions can affect the amount of benefit.
In addition, previous overpayments of benefit, or repayments of crisis loans can also reduce an amount of benefit.
Lastly, sometimes if people have been on benefits for a very long time, there may be what's called 'transitional protection'. Occasionally a certain benefit is phased out or changed in some way. This can disadvantage claimants who now have to change to a different benefit. As a result they will get an extra amount of money to make up the difference, this is the transitional protection.
Clearly if one or more of the above scenarios apply, then one person's ESA could be difference to another persons.

Your mother should have received an award letter when she initially claimed, or at her last review. Normally there is also an annual award statement. Look out this paperwork and it should list all the various elements that comprise your mother's ESA award. If you can not find this, or still can not understand the award, then phone DWP and get them to explain how the ESA payment is derived. It could of course be wrong!
If you need any further information you could seek advice from eg CAB or similar advice centre. You could ask them to provide a full benefits check for your mother. (They will know if the benefit is right, or whether there are other benefits your mother could be entitled to receive and doesn't already. It is always useful to get a benefit check done every so often, and personal and legal circumstances change which c an lead to extra benefit entitlement.
I hope this helps.
