PIP Activity 7. Communicating was created by Andy
Hello, I am deaf in my right ear and was issued with a hearing aid at the hospital following tests (audiogram and mri scan). My question is would this automatically get 2 points in this activity for needing to use an aid to correct my hearing.

Hi Andy,
Yes, a hearing aid would comprise an aid or appliance in respect of communicating, and should allow you 2 points.
Just to clarify, there isn't such a thing as automatic points. Provided you fully explain your situation, DWP should readily accept the need for points on the basis of poor hearing, and hence should give 2 points. If you are filling out a PIP form make sure you explain about your hearing and include a medical report about your hearing loss if you have one. If not you may wish to obtain one from your hearing care specialist.
Please also consider whether you need other assistance such as support etc, as you may be able to achieve more points under the same descriptor. Also bear in mind that even despite using your hearing aids, if you still have difficulties with communicating eg you can not do this to an acceptable standard, such you still miss words, or you can't speak back properly etc, then you may be able to gain more points. Regulations state that the highest points value should be awarded when 2 or more descriptors apply in any one section.
I hope this helps.

Hi LL26,
I have to use a combination hearing aid as a result of having sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. and also having bilateral Tinnitus.
My aids are used during the day but not at night ie when sleeping for obvious reasons.
And as in regards to PIP Activity 7, due to sensorineural hearing loss means during conversations i cannot hear soft, and or certain spoken words, and especially if there's background noises.
Would you think apart from 7 b. Needs to use an aid or appliance to be able to
speak or hear. = (2) points.
Would it also be worth mentioning that i sometimes need support from a friend or family member with communicational needs even though i use an hearing aid, or does this come across relatively contradictive.
Regards.

Hi mrfibrospondodysthmatic
You have to be open and honest, if you need support from a friend or family member for communicational needs then say so and explain why you need this additional support.

Hi LL26
Thanks for answering my question. Although the hearing aid corrects my hearing to an acceptable standard I also have permanant high pitched tinnitus as well. I find I really struggle to hear when their is any background noise. Because of this blasted covid I have spent the last 12 months in the house and I am really struggling to convey this hearing difficult down on paper. If I am in the kitchen with the extractor fan on and somebody speaks to me from the dining room I haven't a clue what they say. I would have to come into the dining room so that I can actually see the person speak. Speaking on the phone is awkward as well because half the time I am just guessing what that person on the other end of the line has said.
I have my PIP telephone assessment next friday but I did not put enough information in my questionnaire on how my hearing affects me. I mainly concentrated on other activities regarding lack of motivation caused by my disability and the problems I have with concentration doing these activities. Will the assessment accept more evidence over the phone and then put it in the report.

Our daughter has been told her poor hearing is sensorineural and aids won't even help. So you can certainly point out that with this type of hearing loss the aids do not restore your hearing to 'normal' only help partially, so this is why you still need a person to help at times. Then you get into the 50% thing, maybe a diary would help.
Best wishes, Denby
