Extended PIP award due to Covid 19 was created by jeanpepedog@yahoo.co.uk
On July 2nd I received form PIP1043 award review form, dated June 9th, telling me it was time to review my PIP award, which dated from September 4th 2017 and was for 4 years, and that I had to return the form by July 9th.
I was astonished by this, as the last letter I received, dated November 8th 2020, says, that due to Covid 19: "We have extended your PIP award until 07/05/2022. We will continue to pay your PIP payment as normal. Your PIP has been extended until 07/05/2022." There was no mention that this date may be subject to review and be brought forward.
I rang DWP to query this anomaly and to complain about the delay in receipt. Nathan, the call centre operative dismissed all my objections, saying the original extension was administrative and they were entitled to bring it forward.
I asked whether the extension had been done by formal review but he clearly had no idea. He said all extended awards were being reviewed and reassessed, and that it was taking months, so it may get to May 2022 anyway! He said only telephone assessments were being done, not face to face. He extended the time to reply to August 2nd in view of the delay. I said I wasn't satisfied with my review being brought forward after a formal decision had been made to extend it and I objected strongly. He said I would have to complete the form and could put a letter of complaint in with it!
Obviously no-one wants to undergo such a stressful procedure a minute before they have to, so I would like to know whether the DWP is within its legal rights to ask me to complete a review form in June 2021 following a decision, made and communicated to me, to extend my award to May 2022. It seems a very dubious practice to me. There is absolutely nothing in the letter of November 8th 2020, informing me of the extension to May 2022, which says that they may, or suggests that they have the right, to bring forward that date of May 2022. Surely any extension of the award would have had to be done by a formal decision, and therefore reviewed by another formal decision, thus attracting the right of appeal? I cannot believe that a "letter of complaint" will get me anywhere at all!
As he told me that the reviews of all extended awards were being brought forward, I expected to see quite a lot about it in your "News" section but I have been unable to find anything at all.
I shall be grateful for anything you can tell me about this very unfair development. Thank you.

Hi Jean

Welcome
Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your email address appears to be showing in the forum, and you should change this as it is open to everyone.

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

Your PIP award was extended until 7/05/2022. A lot of claimants were given extensions. PIP reviews are typically sent out a year before the end date of an award. So following your extension you would have expected to receive a review form any time after the 07/05/2021. This is what has happened to you. Sometimes it is a year, ten months, eight months and sometimes six months. Your review date has not been "brought forward" - it is at the expected time. Obviously if you are not aware of the system - it comes as a horrible shock.

So to clarify - the end date of your award was extended - but review forms are sent out long before the award end to make sure that there is time to process the forms and hold assessments and ensure that payments are continuous. This has always been the practice since PIP was implemented. Under the law the DWP can review a claimants award at any time.

So there is nothing to stop you from complaining about the practice - but it is the one that is in place and I agree that a letter of complaint probably won't get you anywhere.

Sorry not to be able to give you more positive news.

I too received a extension to my award BUT just one month later received the PIP review forms to complete and return within two weeks, this being just a handful of weeks before Christmas 2020.

After a misleading telephone assessment, I have yet to receive the DWP decision, some eight months later.

Good luck with your claim.
