pip confusion was created by saturano
I recently got my pip award High for both. A nurse came and interviewed me. She said that because I’m on morphine I will get high for both. I have been on much higher doses of morphine in the past 10 years but they wouldn’t give me high. At one point I was on 400 mg a day that is Really high and they only gave me medium care. Is there any thing I can do about the past . It’s not right, caused me great distress even though I awas on an enormous amount of medicine. Surely this isn’t right and are they doing this to others.

Hi Saturano

I know people who are on morphine, but don't have enhanced rate PIP. And I know plenty of people on large amounts of medication for a variety of conditions who have only been awarded standard or refused PIP altogether.

In order to be awarded PIP - standard or advanced or a combination of both a claimant has to meet the specific PIP criteria and although medication plays a part, it is not necessarily a large one and certainly not the only thing that is considered. The official guidance on PIP assessments for Health Professionals, makes no mention that I can see that a specific drug means that a claimant will automatically be awarded a specific award.

A claimant can only challenge decisions that are less than 13 months old .

Dear Saturano, forgive a little suspicion, but you haven't yet had your award?? It is generally recommended that you call to ask for your assessment report 48 hours after the visit/call. Sadly sometimes assessors say nice things and write not-nice things. Or even if they do write as they spoke, DWP decision makers don't follow the report. Best to get it and see ASAP, as if it isn't nice you can write in to say about errors before they decide. Do come back if you have more questions.
Regards,
Denby

A PIP award is not based on any health diagnosis on its own, it is based on your mobility and care needs that are substantially in excess of another person who is not disabled. The DWP Case Manager should be able to determine the severity of your condition(s) and the associated mobility and care needs based on the dose and type of medications you are taking. However, this alone does not guarantee you any award for benefit. The nurse who advised you of this has advised you incorrectly. However, she may have based her report that your condition is severe due to you being prescribed morphine.
