PIP, the review form and university

PIP, the review form and university was created by Mystery1997
My last issue was sorted.

I now have to fill out the PIP form which I've been doing however I want to go to university in September and feel this could cause an issue.

I have a number of mental health issues (Borderline Personality Disorder, Body Dysmorphia, Contamination OCD, Anxiety and Depression) which makes daily life and being around others difficult.

I think it's better for me to mention now that I'm planning on going back rather than in September/October as if there's a gap they may feel as though my condition has improved which won't be the case.

Currently I don't leave the house unless I have to do something and have a clear plan on what I'm doing/where I'm going and even then I might have a bad day and need to stay at home. I don't take spontaneous walks or go out to socialise or anything.

I know that University can be an overwhelming/social place and that it won't be smooth sailing for me however I really want to continue my studies (I dropped out once before) as it's something that will benefit my future and give me a routine so that I have something to do during the day rather than just constantly being at home.

I plan on writing that my goal is to go to university this winter and that I know certain activities will be difficult due to my respective issues and that I will have my bad days, but that I plan on communicating this with the university so that they can facilitate my needs. I won't be staying in the halls as I feel it would be very difficult in terms of having to have shared spaces (I also can't afford it but truly wouldn't want to stay in halls regardless).

I'd only go a few days per week, typically 3 or 4 and you a lot of them are short. The academic year is shorter and it involves a lot of self study. A lot of the class material is online so if I'm having a bad day I can study at home. With lectures you just sit down and do your work and that when it comes seminars and group work I'll let the professor know what I am and am not capable of doing. I don't think I'll be able to stand in front of class and do a presentation. And because of my contamination OCD I'm funny about the seats that I sit in and using public toilets. My social anxiety will be present and I'll most likely spend breaks by myself but I can go on my phone or go to the library as a distraction. My issues will still be present while I'm at university as they are in other areas of my life, I'll just have to make it work for me somehow.

Should I bother to write all of this in the review form? Or tell them around September/October? Should I tell them at all?

Do you think my explanation is good? I did go to university once before with all of these issues and it was very difficult but I dropped out for other reasons. I was also receiving PIP back then. I can do it but it is very difficult, more so than it is for people without mental health issues.

Any advice would be helpful.

Also how can I change my username? Or could a mod change it for me?

Hello,

If you follow this link it will give instructions as to how you can change your screen name. It is not something we have the power to do.

Doing an activity such as going to work, or in your case should not directly effect your chance of getting PIP. What they will be looking at is consistency between what you put on your form as things you experience difficulty with and what you actually do. A classic case is if you declare in the assessment that you have a dog, then there will be an assumption that you can walk the dog, therefore you are not entitled to any mobility payment.

You need to look at what you are declaring on your PIP2 form and think about whether or not this could be seen as being inconsistent with going to university. Very often what might appear to be inconsistent, as with my example above of owning a dog is suddenly consistent when you add in the fact that a friend takes it for walks twice a day.

What you put in your post makes perfect sense to me, but I have not seen what you have put on your PIP2 form. Try to view your application with hyper-critical eyes to search out possible inconsistencies and then make sure that you explain how you hope to work around these.

I hope that makes sense, I wish you every success with both your PIP and future.

Hi Mystery1997

We can't change your username - that's something you have to do. You will find the instructions in the link below. if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ. It will say about your full name - which obviously isn't the case - but the instructions are the same

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

Students who study at university are still able to claim for PIP. However, if the activities you do as part of your course suggest that your health has improved, your PIP could be reduced or stopped. If your care needs and/or mobility are still the same then there should be no problem. The challenge is wording it so you don't make it sound as if your health has improved if it hasn't.

Because it's not your first time on a course and because you are trying to think ahead at what it's going to be like you have wisely articulated the difficulties you may have and are thinking about the strategies you need to manage what will undoubtedly be a challenging situation. However, at the moment to go into so much detail when you actually don't know how well you can manage, risks an assessor assuming that your health has improved (not just that you're trying to manage your health and a new situation.

if you leave it to inform them in September and October that you are going, it could trigger another review.

If you don't inform them and they later find out you could risk your benefit for not informing them.

So there is no easy answer. I understand what you're saying and it is well thought out. If you do use it all be aware it is open to being challenged.

Morning. Contact your University’s Disability Service. You should be allocated a Study Mentor and the Disability Service can help with Adjustments; help in the library, extensions, special exam provisions etc. Look on the University website to see what services are on offer and have a chat with them. Also apply for Disability Student Allowance (DSA) if you have not already done so. This will pay for the Study Mentor.
