Pip:wait for renewal or inform of deterioration? was created by Jade
Hi, I have chronic pain, fibromyalgia and pots. I got given pip in 2019 without an appeal or MR and got standard daily living but not mobility. At the time I was already using crutches to walk and struggling but I was happy to not have to push so accepted the decision.
My review date was pushed back by a year due to covid so its not til next year but I know the forms could land on my door step fairly soon (based on someone else I know being a few months ahead of me having already done hers).
The problem I have is that my health has got quite a bit worse since then. I wasn't diagnosed with any of my conditions then, and my pots was deffinatly not as bad. My mobility is also worse, I have no choice but to push myself a lot further than I should at times, but it's massively negatively affecting my health and I'm now waiting for my nhs wheelchair to arrive, I'm also considering a mobility scooter to help with school runs. I can no longer drive so thats not an option.
So should I be informing them of the deterioration now and start from the beginning, or do I just wait for the renewal, which could still be quite some time?
Thanks for your help

Hello Jade,
Only you can make the decision, and it would be wrong for us to make a recommendation not knowing all the details of your claim. (Sorry about that.)
If you were my client I would point out that there is always a risk, albeit small, that a new claim could result in you losing your current award and having to fight for it with an MR and possibly an Appeal. I think from what you say that that is unlikely, but you do need to be aware.
Have a look at our PIP guide PIP resources . It is currently the first link down on that page. Pages 8 - 10 tell you what scores points. Have a very honest look at them and then decide. For both daily living and mobility if you score 8 points you get the standard award and if you score 12 points you get the enhanced award.
Another point you might wish to consider is if you reapply now then, if you are successful, you will get the additional award sooner. If you wait until review time, if your condition is continuing to deteriorate then you should stand a better chance of being successful.
I hope that has helped rather than confused, and here is to you making the right decision!

Hi. It’s so horrible and stressful I would just use this time to gather together all your supporting information. Once you have done that, and a ‘draft’ application I would phone up for a ‘change of circumstances’. Do all the work first, then you can gauge whether or not this is feasible (ie. you would get a higher award). As soon as you phone up a countdown begins to return the forms, so it’s best (in my opinion) to do all the work first.
