Health assessment advisory service assessment was created by Alybongo65
Hi
I’m on a big time panic ,
I’ve just received a letter saying that the DWP have been asked to Carry out an assessment in relation to my claim .They've given me a date to have a telephone assessment on September the10th , I suffer from severe anxiety , Boarder line personality disorder , extreme ptsd and depression. Im on many medications ,I’m already triggered and I’ve weeks to wait , this will be the first in a few years and has come out off the blue , Can you advise what is the best way forward with the site to read up please . To be prepared what they will ask , should I ring and tell them my new medication and mental health updates or wait till the call .
Many thanks in advance

Hi Alybongo65,
I am sorry to hear that you are panicking about the assessment. Firstly you may wish to read the members guides. Loads of useful info about everything including assessments. You can look here:
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/?dlp=612000b0b7903
If you feel that the thought of the assessment will simply consume you with panic to the exclusion of everything else then you might wish to visit/contact your GP to see if he will write a letter on your behalf, saying that you couldn't cope with the assessment. The GP should explain your medical conditions and if possible show that there is a strong likelihood of your claim succeeding. Showing that you have communication difficulties or difficulties relating to others etc is also important. If you have overriding psychological distress ie OPD it is really important to explain this.
There was a recent change to the rules about assessments. There is now a right to argue which assessment if any should be held. See page 88 on the above link. The key is evidence! If you have consultant's letters in reports please send those too.
Contact DWP and also your assessment provider, just to make sure.
I know that many people get very anxious about assessments. It doesn't help that there is a lot if bad press about these Nevertheless there are kindly assessors too, (yes, they do actually exist,) and often even the ones that write poor reports are actually friendly at the time. Rather than think about the assessment try and focus on something pleasant, difficult I know, but distraction is good at these times.
Hopefully your GP will support you, and you will not need to attend an assessment.
Good luck.

Thankyou so much for your response,
I’m trying to keep busy cleaning but not to keen when I wake up at 3 am and start cleaning the cooker ... my thoughts just won’t switch off , I did call the doctor a few months ago I was not in a good place and having extreme dark thoughts and on the daily calls from Mind , when I got a call back from the Doctor he was as useful as a chocolate fire guard prescribed me Diazepam , I was shocked as here I am having dark thoughts and he gives me diazepam... was it to help me on my way , also they charge for the letter again which is shocking in itself but need must , I will try to get through and past the receptionist hopefully get a support letter .
I have a 4 off my support groups which wrote a letter on my behalf , I am also going through a complex childhood trauma case that’s been put on hold because off the virus which is in the IOM ,I didn’t realize the IOM is not in uk & the person involved lives in Scotland so it’s more complicated this is all hanging over me . I’ve also just found out the officer supporting me is going on maternity leave so after her being my support officer for 2 years I’ve know got to get to know someone else , this is another trigger as I have fear off abandonment do not like change so this is having a massive affect on my mental health .
Is it just me or are (Severely mentally impaired what’s written on my esa letter ) not taken into consideration that the whole process off the way the system works with letters time scale phone calls and threats off having benefits being taken away , the impact makes a enormous contribution on top off our already anxiety’s over thinking and loose our breadline to pay bills mortgage food
Sorry to waffle but I am not in a good place and worried,
Again Thankyou so very much you do a great job I am extremely grateful in any advice given .
Warmest regards
Alybongo

Good morning
Just to clarify the 4 support letters are for another complex legal battle that’s been going on for 12 years yes 12 years not months weeks or days , In which I may loose my house ,these letters where to support me to make aware the *disgraceful solicitors actions treatment and no thought to myself as a client in need off closure.Especially being classed as severely Mentally vulnerable with many mental health issues having dark thoughts on medications who is on constant fight or flight , with extreme dark thoughts .
Again thanks just didn’t want you to think the letters where for this assessment.
Warmest regards
Alybongo

Good morning Alybongo65,
I recently supported someone with an appeal where we submitted evidence which had actually been prepared for another court case. I was (rightly) ticked off for not redacting other people’s names from that evidence before I submitted it to the tribunal. Just don’t want you to make the same mistake!

Dear Alybongo65, As your assessment date is still a fortnight away, plenty of time to contact the assessment provider. Please consider asking them to record the assessment. It is so much better to have a recording. Firstly it puts them on warning you are not a pushover! -always good. Secondly if there are any problems you will have the evidence.
It's also important if you possibly can, to find a friend, relative or other trusted person to sit in with you during the call to help you stay calmer, maybe take notes, maybe nudge you when they can see you need a break which you are entitled to, maybe take a backup recording, be there for you after the call ends so you can vent to someone who was there. Do tell the assessor if you have someone, it is your right. Just remember they need to be someone you won't mind hearing your answers to some pretty probing questions.
Best wishes, and do let us know how it goes. Remember to call them 48 hours after, to ask for your assessment report. You have a right to write in if there is anything in it you did not say or things missing that you did say etc. Do it ASAP if you need to.
Regards,
Denby
