Carers Credit question? was created by saz
Hello - I also have a question around acting as an unpaid carer. I dont know if you are able to advise on this?
I do a Lot of work for a disabled relative who lives in a care home. I am her Deputy (Finance and Welfare) and thus there is quite a lot to do in that way. She needs a special diet so I also do her shopping to ensure she gets her needs met. And I attend all medical appts. All in all I easily spend 20hrs/week looking out for her needs. Which is quite exhausting considering my own health is not good. I was told a long time ago by a social worker that I could not claim carer credits because relative lives in a residential home.
I would like to ask if this is still the case? I have come here as its so difficult to speak to anyone these days at a CAB or such-like and I remembered that your site was very helpful in the past.
I am also now helping out a friend who has post-operative complications but he is not getting any kind of disability payment.

Thanks

Hi saz,
Firstly let me explain a little, as I know this will be helpful for other forum members who read our posts.
Carer’s Credit gives NI credits to those whose income is reduced by virtue of caring at least 20 hours per week. Obviously this means that if you have any gaps in your NI contributions these can be made up affording the possibility of a full State Pension or go towards other contribution based benefits.
Payment of Carer’s Credit doesn't actually provide any extra money coming in, unlike Carer’s Allowance.
You can get Carer’s Credit if the person cared for gets a qualifying benefit such as PIP or DLA. Otherwise there is a form that can be signed off by a registered Social Worker.
However, normally when disabled people go into residential care Carer’s Allowance will stop after 28 days. I believe that Carer’s Credits are the same. I can't find any information to contradict this.
There is more information here, and a contact number.
www.gov.uk/carers-credit/what-youll-get
If you perform caring for more than 20 hrs for the friend you mention at the end of your post, then this may create eligibility for the Carer’s Credit.
I hope this helps.

Thankyou I followed yr links and have sent an email to the relevant agency to ask the question as the caring for disabled relative does take up a lot of my time as I am Deputy.
