Carers was created by Bud
Hi all

We had a call from WR today to say that we can both claim carers. My partner already has an underlying entitlement, so doesn’t get full carers for me. WR said that my partner would now be able to get full carers for me, & I would be able to claim the underlying entitlement for him. I don’t understand this as nothing has changed for us. WR said that this is because I have no other income of my own apart from enhanced Daily living PIP so I could claim carers for him, & the money would be taken from my partners ESA.

He get living expenses for us both £116.80
Extra money because we are severely disabled £133.90
Extra because he is my carer £37.50
Extra disability income guarantee £24.50
Extra support group £39.20
Total £351.90

He get PIP at enhanced for daily living £89.00
PIP mobility enhanced. £62.55

I get pip enhanced daily living £89.00

Could you shed any light on this matter please as I'm totally confused. Might I add that I have no memory of WR saying that he could claim full carers for me, but my partner insists. Plus WR kept mentioning an extra £33.00 rather than £37.50 that he gets as my carer.

Thanks.

Hi Bud

The figures you are quoting are out of date, they were increased at the begining of April.

I can see what WR are saying and the reason why, they are trying to maximise your benefits.

You may want to ask them to give you a better off calculation before and after you claim for CA so that you can see the difference.

I think they are wrong but you would need to see the figures.

You seem to be getting 2 x SDP (Extra money because we are severely disabled £133.90)

You say that you are only receiving PIP, so if you claim CA then whilst you will gain another Carers Premium (£37.70 ) you will lose one of the SDPs (£66.95) as you will be actually receiving the CA and the CA (£67.60) will also be deducted from your partner's ESA, leaving a net loss of about £30/week by my calculation.

The only way what they are suggesting would work would be if you were also receiving Contribution Based ESA or New Style ESA so that your CA claim was also only an underlying entitlement so that a second CA Premium could be added.

Gary, WR did say that they'd do the better off calculation for us but I wanted time to think as it didn't seem right to me. I don't want to lose out, but I don't want to change things either if there's not much in it as it will bring on the succession of browns in the mail & God knows what mistakes DWP could make in the process.

Hey Gordon, good to see you!

Did you mean wrong about the full CA & the half carers?

I feared that money would be lost, so thought I'd come on here & get more advice.

ESA is based on NI contributions.

Thanks very much to you both
