Can a PIP Claimant, claim Carers? was created by paulcornwall
Background: My daughter and I have the same inherited disease. My daughter claims DLA, while I have just been awarded PIP. My wife is currently my daughters carer and claims Carers allowance. I have no nominated carer.
Question - Would I be able to claim Carers allowance for my daughter and my wife transfers her claim for Carers allowance to myself?

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Paul,
I'm pleased that your PIP award has come through.
Legally there is no problem claiming Carer’s Allowance whilst on PIP, however there is a need to be careful. As a PIP claimant it is clear that you will have disabilities this will beg the question how can you look after your daughter and not bd able to look after yourself! Bearing in mind that your daughter has inherited the condition you have, I suspect that means you may have the same limitations.
I'm not sure of the logistics here but it seems that your wife will have to cancel CA for your daughter and then reclaim and then you claim. To me that sounds complicated and the sort of thing that DWP might think is unusual and so might merit more scrutiny.
So to recap yes legally no problem but just consider the implications.
Good luck.

To be eligible for Carer’s Allowance you have to provide a minimum of 35 hours of care per week. If your wife is the person providing your daughter’s care, a claim in your name would be considered fraudulent.

LL26, thank you as ever for your help. I was just thinking in ways to optimise the PIP and carers as I've been without it most of my adult life, paid thousands in tax and now need to ensure I'm claiming everything I can be. Not being greedy, just wanting what I'm entitled to. This board is great and the advise so helpful. Thank you and keep safe.

Hi Paul, don't forget if your income exceeds £128 per week [not counting PIP of course] but you don't work, you might be eligible for Carer's Credit. This does not give you any cash but keeps up your NI contributions towards your State pension. The amount of caring threshold for this is lower, only 20 hours per week and a health professional can sign the downloadable form.
Hope this may be useful, it was some time before I even heard of it as not all benefits advisers know it exists.
