Taking a holiday was created by Tuliptrees
Hello

I would like to ask if it is possible to take a holiday in Europe, and if so, what is the maximum yearly term applied. For example, if it is 12 weeks in a year, can those 12 weeks be taken in one go. The reason I ask is that I have various health issues which affect me in different ways, shorter more frequent breaks are not really an option. Also to achieve a longer holiday would supporting consultants' letters help?

Hello Margo,

According to this site
www.gov.uk/claim-benefits-abroad/disability-benefits
you can go for 13 weeks. What I cannot find anywhere is how many 13 week trips you can make in one year. If you are thinking about doing more than one I would suggest that you give the PIP helpline a ring (assuming you are talking about PIP).

hi, its a very difficult question to ask, strangely.
you are meant to inform the DWP if you away from home longer than 48 hours whilst on ESA, be it cb, or ir, in case thy need to speak to you !!!!
You are permitted 2 weeks hols if you contact the DWP if you are on ESA cb or ir
PIP does have the longer time span.
Another link says you can be away for a month!!!!
Often when you phone to say you are going away on holiday they will say thats fine, others want to know the ins and outs and others say no and in some cases it can trigger a re assessment..
They do know if you go abroad as the service is set to inform the DWP when you go thru passport control, believe me they do know, i know from bitter experience.
Even having a letter from the DWP saying tis ok to leave, may trigger some unpleasant surprises.
Even rightsnet have found it difficult to obtain a true definition and hence the protracted cases.
I'm not suggesting do what you like, or take a chance or follow the useless guidelines by the DWP, just decide what is best for yourself.

For PIP, you can leave the UK for 13 weeks.
For ESA it is 28 days. If you take a red eye flight and land in the UK at 1 minute past midnight on day 29 they can suspend your ESA. Do not tempt them. I went for 27 days, just in case a storm delayed my return flight.
Certain things grant extra time: medical treatment, bereavement, etc.

You can travel multiple times in a year. It is highly advisable to inform the DWP before you leave, telling them that you will be travelling abroad for (foo) days.
