PIP Review Question

PIP Review Question was created by Capyboppy
I was telling a friend about the PIP review form and how I have recently bought an expensive (to me, but necessary) hot water dispenser, which has been invaluable. Even with a 'kettle swing' I was having difficulties using it, hence this much easier dispenser which not only is easy to use, but is far less dangerous.

They suggested I didn't put this down on the form as it could be interpreted as I would no longer need help due to an 'aid' that is so helpful. Do they have a point on this? I thought as I have deteriorated and it was a need, it would support my review statement.

Hello Capyboppy,

Some assessors like to say that any aid which has not been prescribed by a health professional does not count. But there are no grounds for this. If I was helping you complete your form I would put something like, you cannot use a kettle because of......, and as a result you have had to have a hot water dispenser installed. I would agree with you that ultimately having that need should support your claim.

Thank you Cathy and sorry for the delay in replying, My brain fog and pain held me up. . It could be argued too I think if that I was totally on my own, or say at a meeting where there was a kettle, wouldn't be able to use it most of the time. People have had to help when they have seen me struggling to try and lift things like water jugs, kettles etc, before I do myself a mischief!

Thank you for the good work modding that you do.

Hi capyboppy,
I'm going to throw a bit of a curved ball in here. Yes, absolutely refer to aid/appliances even if not prescribed by GP etc. However, be careful here. I don't see how a hot water dispenser helps you prepare a simple meal.(Descriptor 1) or how it helps you take nutrition under Descr.2.. Perhaps I am wrong?
The danger is that unless you can explain the use of the water dispenser, the assessor/decision maker might just go 'so what, it doesn't help with Descr 1 or 2, so its irrelevant', and it will just distract DWP and then you may not get the correct points on these and other descriptors. If you use various gadgets, be they actual or improvised, you could mention this in the any other info box, say eg my hands are so riddled with arthritis and painful that this makes many tasks very difficult. In addition to all the aids/appliances already listed under the descriptor questions, I rely on many other disability gadgets such as hot water dispenser, because I can't even lift a kettle., I also use ....because.. . this is further evidence that I reasonably require X aid to assist me to prepare a simple meal...and Y to help with...
I hope this helps.

I use a kettle when preparing a simple meal - boiling vegetables or rice, for example.

Thank you LL26. I do other gadgets to help yes. In reference to preparing a simple meal or taking nutrition I can think of a few things. As AliBee has said, pouring hot or boiled water into a pan to save on electricity would be one I would have thought. But correct me if I am wrong. If I was wanting to make a hot protein drink or soup in a cup, would possibly be another. Without the hot water dispenser I would not be able to do these in a timely manner, as I can only think the alternative would be to try and mix for example a sachet of Complan with water and try and get the lumps out, and microwave which would mean keep opening and shutting the microwave door. We don't have an oven hob as we replaced the gas cooker we had with an IKEA induction hob as it was far safer if I fell or go dizzy. These are probably terrible examples as I am struggling somewhat at the moment. Prior to getting my 4 year award I did put down the aids and devices I use.
